Introduction
The Students and Teachers web pages were produced by a practicing science/art teacher employed by the Bureau of Meteorology. They include lesson plans, student worksheets and information pages. Below are instructions and information relating to specific issues you may have in using these web pages. Hopefully we have covered most of the major issues. If you have any comments, suggestions or criticism please feel free to communicate them to us via the feedback link found in the footer of each page. If you use the words education, students or teachers, somewhere in your emailed feedback, it will help us to find your email out of the hundreds that we receive. Please note you are free to make photocopies of the educational materials provided, for use in the classroom.
How to use lesson plans, student worksheets and information pages The lesson plans have solutions to questions found on the student worksheets. Treat them as references and as a starting point for further discussion. You may want to prevent students from accessing the solutions to questions given on the teacher lesson plan. Hurricanes Lesson Plan . Follow our wandering hurricane Gordon as it matures and moves into the Atlantic The 17 east coast storms of 1994 Lesson Plan . In 1994 the East Coast experienced seventeen winter storms. These storms deposited ice, snow, and rain and caused most communities to max out their budgets for snow removal and salting. Salt was at a premium that year and most of us learned to drive on icy roads! This lesson plan will show the path of the Jet Stream and the development of the storms during this winter. Gulf Stream Lesson Plan . Similar to the lesson for 1993 but includes images that are not found in 1993. Hurricanes Lesson Plan . Follow our wandering hurricane Gordon as it matures and moves into the Atlantic Summer Highs Lesson Plan . Those Lazy, Hazy, Crazy days of summer include summer High Pressure systems. With this lesson plan you can show your students what a High Pressure area looks like and the type of circulation associated with the High. Orographic Lifting Lesson Plan . You and I have read about the rising air on the windward side of a mountain range forming stationary storms and thunderstorms. This series of images shows the formation of storms over the Siera Madre of Mexico. Severe Storms Lesson Plan When studying the formation of thunder storms and tornadoes, one of the first things that you look for on a satellite image is the V shaped clouds that indicate severe storms. This sereis of images show the formation of storms that caused major damage during the 1994 storm season.

Hurricane Emily came very close to the East Coast in 1993. Watch the formation, movement, and decline of this hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean. Super Storm 1993 . This storm was one of the largest snow generators of this century. Watch the formation and movement of this massive storm. Severe Storms Lesson Plan . This lesson plan helps the students understand the cloud signature of sever storms that form over the central US. South America Lesson Plan . Show your students what a Rain Forest looks like from a weather satellite point of view! The Terminator Lesson Plan . If you have ever been frustrated teaching time zones, this lesson plan will allow students see exactly why we have the time zones in the US. Thunderstorms Lesson Plan . After working on this lesson plan, students will understand why most thunderstorms form in the afternoon and evening hours. Wind Belts Lesson Plan . In real life, Wind Belts are not located in fixed positions, nor are they a constant width. Using this lesson plan you can show the students the wind belts associated with North America.

      • Key Idea 4.4: Students know the structure of the solar system, composition and interactions of objects in the universe, and how space is explored Grade/Level: Grades K-4 Performance Indicator: recognizing the characteristics of seasons
Subject: Reading and Writing Standard 2: Students write and speak for a variety of purposes and audiences Writing and speaking are essential tools for learning, for success in the workplace, and for responsible citizenship. Developing a range of writing and speaking abilities requires extensive study, practice, and thinking. Students need frequent opportunities to write and speak for different audiences and purposes, and they need to be able to communicate expressively, informatively, and analytically. Growth in writing and speaking abilities occurs by applying skills to increasingly challenging communication tasks.

      - The Educator Resource Center at the Goddard Space Flight Center serves educators in the eleven northeastern states (Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont) and the District of Columbia. Located at the Goddard Visitor Center, the Educator Resource Center is a place where educators can come and use NASA resources to develop their aerospace education programs. Here educators research, gather ideas and duplicate audiovisual materials. Materials available at the resource laboratory reflect NASA's research and technology development and relate to such curricula areas as astronomy, Earth science, aeronautics, mathematics, physical science and life science. Teachers in disciplines other than science and mathematics are encouraged to explore ways in which aerospace materials may be incorporated into their classroom lessons.

    GUIDE TO FINDING LESSON PLANS:
    Internet Resources and print materials
    Education and Social Science Library
    University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
The Education and Social Science Library has many materials containing lesson plans, primarily in the form of curriculum guides, in both print and microfiche formats. According to the Facts on File Dictionary of Education , a curriculum guide differs from a lesson plan , in that it includes "one or more aspects of curriculum and instruction, such as philosophy, policies, aims, objectives, subject matter, resources and processes" (p.138), while a lesson plan "includes the instructional objectives and methods for a particular functional unit or period of instruction" (p.271). Many lesson plans are embedded within the curriculum guides. The following is an explanation of several ways to locate lesson plans and other teaching materials on a particular topic in the Education and Social Sciences Library. Please direct all comments or requests for information to Nancy O'Brien.
