Methodist Articles of Religion
General Information The Articles of Religion is a term commonly used for the standards of doctrine of the United Methodist Church. The Articles stem from the abridgment of the Thirty-nine Articles of the Church of England prepared by John Wesley for use in the American Methodist Episcopal Church organized in 1784; Wesley reduced the Thirty-nine Articles to twenty-four. The organizing conference added a twenty-fifth article (Article 23) outlining the church's relationships with the newly formed American government. This article replaced Article XXXVII of the Book of Common Prayer, a statement of the authority of the British monarch over the church, which Wesley had wisely omitted from his list. BELIEVE

Preface

(Unofficial) [Bibliographical Note: The Articles of Religion are here reprinted from the Discipline of 1808 (when the first Restrictive Rule took effect), collated against Wesley's original text in The Sunday Service of the Methodists (1784).] I Explanation: The Methodist Articles of Religion are a statement of how Methodists interpret the Holy Scriptures given to man by the Holy Spirit, consisting of the 39 books of the Hebrew Bible, commonly referred to by Christians as the Old Testament, and the 27 books of the New Testament. Methodists are "followers" of John and Charles Wesley in the sense that we agree with their theology, i.e., their interpretation of Scripture. It is important to understand that like Protestant Reformers such as Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli, the Wesleys did not claim any new revelation II Several of the Articles directly refute specific Roman Catholic doctrines or practices, e.g., Articles 5, 7, 9, 10, 13-21. Without an understanding of the Catholic doctrines, the particular Article cannot be correctly understood. It is also important to realize that the average Protestant, even the average Protestant ordained clergy , is not familiar with the particulars of Catholic doctrines such as the Catholic Mass, transubstantiation, and "salvation by grace"

Summary Explanations of the
Methodist Articles of Religion
  • There is one true God who has power, wisdom and goodness. He made and preserves all things. Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one God, the Trinity.
  • Jesus, the divine Son of God was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, dead and buried for the sins of men. Jesus is fully God and fully man.
  • Jesus Christ rose from the dead and ascended into heaven. He will return at the last day to judge all men.
  • The Holy Spirit came from the Father and the Son and is one with them in the Trinity.
  • The Holy Scriptures (or the Bible) contain all truth necessary for salvation.
  • The ancient rites and ceremonies of the Old Testament do not bind Christians. But its moral teachings should be obeyed.
  • Original sin is the evil in man's nature which he inheritis.
  • The free will of man must have divine help in order that he may do good and please God.
  • We are justified, or pardoned, not by good works, but by faith in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
  • Good works are the fruits of our faith and are pleasing to God.

Except for the Society of Friends , all religious groups in America supported slavery. In the South black people were not usually allowed to attend church services. Those churches that did accept them would segregate them from white worshipers.
One of the main reasons why masters did not want their slaves to become Christians involved the Bible. They feared that slaves might interpret the teachings of Jesus Christ as being in favour of equality. This was one of the main reasons why most plantation owners did what they could to stop their slaves from learning to read.

Dennis Bratcher, ed. The Twenty-five Articles of Religion of the Methodist Church, from the Discipline of 1808 collated against Wesley's original text in The Sunday Service of the Methodists These 25 Articles of Religion were Wesley's adaptation of the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion from the Anglican Church in which Wesley had been a priest. Several of the Articles are aimed directly at distinguishing the beliefs held by Wesley, as well as by Anglicans, from Roman Catholicism. These especially relate to the basis of religious authority (Articles 5-6), justification by grace through faith (Articles 9-11), the nature of the church (Articles 13, 22), the rejection of the doctrine of purgatory (Article 14), the rejection of services in Latin (Article 15), the nature of the sacraments and the rejection of the concept of the Mass (Articles 16-20), and the rejection of a celibate clergy (Article 21). Two of the articles (7, 8) also clearly reject Pelagianism, a heresy contending that human beings are capable of choosing God by exercising their own inherent free will without the necessity of grace. While Wesley never held this position in even a modified form, he was often accused of doing so by Calvinists promoting total predestination and the lack of
