How to use the table
Locate the unit of measure that you want to convert from along the top of the chart. Then look down that column until you reach the row of the unit of measure that you wish to convert to . The number at the intersection of column and row is the conversion multiplier. For example, if you know a water depth is 1230 feet and you want to convert that value into fathoms, look down the "foot" column until you find "fathom" row, where you will find the value 1.6667e-1. Multiply 1230 by 1.6667e-1 and you will find that 1230 feet equals 205 fathoms. The table is used in the same way even when the conversions are between English and Metric units of measurement. For example, if you knew a destination was 7 miles away and wanted to know the metric equivalent, look down the "miles" column until you find the "kilometers" row, and you will find the value 1.609,344. Multiplying 7 miles by 1.609,344 gives you 11.235,408 kilometers, the equivalent metric distance.

Locate the unit of measure that you want to convert from along the top of the chart. Then look down that column until you reach the row of the unit of measure that you wish to convert to . The number at the intersection of column and row is the conversion multiplier. For example, if you know that an area of land is 8 acres in size and you want to convert that value into square feet, look down the "acre" column until you find "square foot" row, where you will find the value 43,560. Multiply 8 by 43,560 and you will find that 8 acres contain 348,380 square feet. Conversions between English and Metric values are performed in the same way.

Metric Conversion Chart
Conversions for
I n German (European) cooking, recipe ingredients tend to be measured by weight, rather than volume. If you don't have a , or kitchen scale, to measure cooking ingredients, we have a conversion chart that can help. The following tables allow you to convert units of weight (grams) to units of volume (tablespoons, teaspoons) for use with the recipes in our collection. There is also a celsius to fahrenheit table for oven temperatures. How to Use the Metric Chart : Find the ingredient you want to measure, and then the English unit you want to convert to. For example, if you want to convert 130 grams of flour to the English system, you first find Mehl on the chart. Go across on the chart to find "HTS" ("heaping tablespoon") and the number of grams in a heaping tablespoon (15). 130 grams of flour = 8.6 heaping tablespoons (130/15=8.6). For larger amounts, use the cups conversion chart (for liquids).

Unit 1: Introduction to Scientific Methods Lesson 20: Introduction to Measurement Objectives: After completing the lesson, students will be able to:
identify the basic units for measuring length, liquid volume, mass, and temperature using the International System of Units
identify the measurement tools to measure length, liquid volume, mass, and temperature in the International System of Units
identify the prefixes used in the International System of Units, and explain what they mean
convert units of measurement in the International System of Units Key Question: "How do scientists measure objects?" Overview: In this introductory lesson, students are introduced to the Inte rnational System of Units (abbreviated SI), as a process scientists use to measure length, liquid volume, mass, and temperature. It is best left up to the individual teacher how best to explain the International System of Units, and the metric system from which it was derived. It is important that students are exposed to the vocabulary of the metric system, and learn how to calculate conversions between units. It is also a good idea to allow some time for students to practice using rulers, balances, graduated cylinders, and thermometers. Measuring objects they bring to class or themselves is usually an interesting approach. The important goal is exposure: future lessons will provide students with a chance to measure objects in a more interesting context.

METRIC CONVERSION
HOW SOON?
by David Smith When guillotines fell during the French Revolution, their blades were measured in a new unit of length, centimeters, not inches. The metric system was literally a revolutionary idea, growing out of the Age of Reason and carried along with Napoleon's soldiers many kilometers, not miles, across Europe and from there to countries around the globe. In our own rational, revolutionary republic, Thomas Jefferson considered the new metric system an admirable advance over old English feet, pints, and pounds. Ben Franklin, John Quincy Adams, and many other leading American thinkers and statesmen agreed. So why hasn't metric happened here? More than 200 years after the metric system began to spread throughout the world, the United States shares the dubious distinction with Burma and Liberia of being one of only three nations that have not converted to the modern metric system. As the only industrialized nation in the world that has not gone metric, the United States faces serious difficulties in international trade, information exchange, and in engineering and construction projects involving other nations. The Congress, the states, the private sector, and all the appropriate agencies of government, including the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), are trying to rectify this situation. Americans are stubborn. One of the biggest obstacles to adopting the metric system in the United States has probably been our inherent dislike for anything that divorces us from the "feel" or "sense" of our traditional values for weight, measurement, distance, and speed. An example is the resistance to the transition to metric highway signs.

History of Metric Conversion
The original metric system was proposed and adopted by the French during the time of the French Revolution and rapidly spread throughout Europe during the Napoleonic wares. It was first proposed in the United States by Thomas Jefferson and later by John Quincy Adams. The metric system is formally know as the International System of Units (SI). The following is a listing of the progress of metric conversion in the United States and in ALDOT after that time:
  • 1866 - Congress authorized the use of SI as a measurement system. 1875 - United States became one of the original 17 nations to sign the "Treaty of the Meter" that established the International Bureau of Weights and Measures. The pupose of this organization was to promote and provide standards of measurement for world wide use. 1893 - The metric measurement standards were adopted in the United States as the fundamental standards for length and mass. Shortly thereafter, our "customary" units of measurement were defined in relation to SI units. 1902 - Congressional legislation requiring the federal government to use SI exclusively was defeated by a single vote.
