What about the culture? The southwest and Bloomfield in particular is rich in both the Hispanic and Native American culture. The Navajo tribe, the largest in the U.S. is our neighbor to the south and west, the Ute tribe to the north and the Jicarilla Apache to the east .
The early homesteaders soon found evidence of the Anasazi (the ancient ones) people throughout the area. Salmon Ruins is located just 2 miles west of Bloomfield, Aztec Ruins National Monument north 9 miles, Chaco Canyon National Monument 30 miles south and Mesa Verde National Monument only 35 miles northwest in southwest Colorado. Scores of other ruins abound in the area for the self explorer.
There are many trading posts in the area which market an abundance of the modern day Native American arts and crafts. Much of the traditional craftsmanship is still represented today in the turquoise and silver jewelry, hand-woven Navajo rugs, pottery, kachinas, baskets and carvings. Casino gambling is available within an hours drive from Bloomfield, the Sky Ute Casino in Ignacio, Colorado, the Ute Mountain Casino at the base of Ute Mountain in Colorado and the Apache Nugget in Dulce, New Mexico.

ca 1885. Photo courtesy of Museum of New Mexico Producing traditional arts and crafts for centuries, today the state's Native American tribes, (nineteen Pueblos, the Mescalero Apache Tribe, Jicarilla Apache Nation, Navajo Nation and Ute Mountain Ute Tribe), create both traditional/antique art and a diverse body of contemporary works, modern takes on classic forms and designs. The result: traditional pottery, woven baskets, silver and gold jewelry and kachinas dolls, sand painting, sculptures, paintings and Navajo rugs. Spanish colonialists arrived (via Mexico) in the 1500s, importing religious art and European methodology. They influenced native art and spawned a uniquely New Mexican tradition of Hispanic art: santos, weaving, painting and detailed metal work, today practiced and innovated by modern artists.
