Southern New Mexico regional history before 1945
Adapted from text prepared at White Sands National Monument
White Sands National Monument
White Sands National Monument is the world's largest outcropping of pure gypsum. The area is surrounded by the missile range and is about 30 miles northeast of WSMR headquarters. It lies just north US Highway 70 about 15 miles west of Alamogordo, 54 miles east of Las Cruces and slightly less than 100 miles from El Paso.
The monument consists of approximately 176,000 acres of pure white gypsum "sand" that shifts continually from one high dune to make another. The glaring white area is almost bare of vegetation. However, many species of plants have adapted to this unusual habitat, and through the gradual extension of roots and stalks, have avoided being buried by the drifting sand. A variety of plants fringe the edge of the park where they grow in weird shapes and forms.
Found also in the 275 square-mile tract are several species of reptiles and rodents that have adapted to their strange environment by developing a bleached white protective coloration.
As the years pass the moving sand bares relics of the past. Among items brought to the surface in the past was an ancient two-wheel cart believed to be an early Spanish carreta.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the historical development of libraries in Mexico, particularly the public libraries, which have so long suffered from inadequate funding and indifferent attitudes. In addition, the services offered by these institutions has been effected by the poor or substandard education of its librarians, the sometimes remote locations of some libraries, the quality of materials housed, and lack of access to the higher quality and current materials of the academic libraries. Highlighted also will be the goal of public libraries in Mexico, an evaluation of their patrons, and their future in the country. Bibliography Bixler, Paul. The Mexican Library . Bingo! A shipwreck survivor reported an island ten sailing days north that was populated by Amazons and was rich in gold and pearls. That sounded to Hernan like the fabled island of California ruled by the Amazonian Queen, Califia. He fairly drooled at the thought. " Andale, hombres ", he told his ship builder, " get on with it ". In 1535, with three galleons and a compliment of over 600 men and women, Hernan sailed into a tranquil bay which he promptly named Santa Cruz. It didn't take him long to figure out that there weren't no gold and there weren't no Amazons, neither. He packed up and sailed south for the last time. But there were pearls in the waters around Santa Cruz. Sebastian Vizcaino set up a pearl fishing colony there in 1596 knowing full well that he was certain to become a wealthy man. He found a few pearls, but not enough to support his expedititon; he also found a whole bunch of unsociable Indians. The only thing Sebastian got out of his misguided tour was an excellent chart of the Mar de Cortes. The only thing California got out of Sebastian's misguided greed was a new name for the pearl-less bay: La Paz.

HOME / History History - Tracing The Tracks and Trails of Northeast New Mexico Northeast New Mexico - Early History Timeline Legends and Lore A long lush memory is embedded in the windswept plains, on the mesa tops and in the secluded mountain canyons of northeast New Mexico. The land has kept a careful record of tracks and trails to present a multi-generational morality play, the ultimate American Western. Stand on top of Capulin, the remains of a volcano inactive now for 10,000 years, for a reminder of the inevitable force of geography. An ancient inland sea with sandy beaches was the obvious place for plodding hadrosaurs and sprinting pterodactyls to leave three-toed tracks embedded in sandstone. Folsom Man had to cross an intercontinental ice bridge and half a continent to hunt bison and other game, only to leave his mark for a curious cowboy to find many centuries later. Droughts forced the Anasazi to migrate south and west to fertile river valleys, establishing grand settlements such as the now-abandoned Pecos Pueblo.

David's note: Some of the language used in this text, and others written in that same period of history, reflect the attitudes and perceptions of that time. David does not endorse some of the language used but feels that readers should experience the writing of that period to better understand today. This particular section, dealing with the Indian Campaigns, is especially demonstrative of the negative attitude toward the Native American population in New Mexico and else and the harsh treatment of these people under deliberate policies promulgated byt the United State Federal Government. David truly regrets any hurt the reproduction of the writings copied here may cause. Mexico History of Mexico Mexico has been enduring for a long time. The first residents reached the area more than 20,000 years ago. In time, the descendants of these first immigrants produced monumental architecture, incredibly precise calendars and advanced agricultural accomplishments (they gave the world corn, chocolate and tomatoes). Beginning around 1200 BC, a series of great civilizations waxed and waned in the central and southern portions of Mexico, including the Olmecs, the Maya, the Toltecs and a number of other groups. The Aztecs began their rise to power around AD 1200, establishing their capital at Tenochtitlan (present-day Mexico City) and eventually conquering all other groups in central Mexico. Like some of their predecessors, they were a warrior civilization. Rivals who were forced to pay tribute to the Aztecs were looking for an opportunity to throw off their rule, and that opportunity soon presented itself.

    New Mexico: The Land
You may turn off "New Mexico" theme at the bottom of this page.
New Mexicans proudly call their state the Land of Enchantment. Enchantment means being under a magic spell or being completely charmed. New Mexicans use the word enchantment to explain the effect New Mexico has on the people who love it. The deep blue sky and the golden sunshine have charms all their own. Enchanting as well are the open spaces and the ever-changing landscapes. New Mexico is located in the southwestern part of the United States. The Southwest is an area that includes New Mexico and Arizona. It also includes parts of Utah, Colorado, Nevada, and California. Because of its size and location, New Mexico has boundaries in common with five other states. Towards the east lie Texas and the western tip of Oklahoma. To the north is Colorado. To the west is Arizona. Utah is the fifth state that borders New Mexico. New Mexico's northwest corner touches Utah's southeast corner. Joined here as well in what is called the "Four Corners Area" are Colorado and Arizona. There is no other place in the United States where four states come together in a single spot. New Mexico shares its southern border with Texas and Mexico. The state's total area is 121,666 square miles. New Mexico is the fifth largest state in the Union. Only Alaska, Texas, California, and Montana are bigger in size.

    History of Mexico
    Early People Endured Conquests
Mexico's history was born of numerous cultural, ethnic, and political contributions from several major indigenous civilizations. Also greatly influencing the early Mexican society were were the Spanish colonists and a significant African population which served colonial leaders as slaves. At least three great civilizations the Mayas, the Olmecs, and the Toltecs preceded the wealthy Aztec empire, conquered in 1519 by the Spanish under Hernando Cortes. This was the first stage in what would be lasting dominion of the Spanish on the history, government and culture of the newly forming country. Important Conquests Changed Early Mexican Society
The Spanish assault on the Aztec Empire in 1519 represented the second major stage of Spanish expansion in the Americas. The first stage had established permanent settlements in the Caribbean Sea, including the city of Santo Domingo (now the capital of the Dominican Republic) and outposts on the island of Cuba. These settlements made it possible for the Spaniards to probe the mainland of Mexico and Central America knowing that they could quickly return to their island outposts.
In 1518, Governor Velazquez sponsored another expedition, this time under the command of his nephew, Juan de Grijalva. The Spaniards returned to Champoton, where they avenged the defeat of the previous expedition, forcing the Maya to retreat inland after three days of fierce fighting. The expedition continued exploring the Gulf Coast, eventually encountering friendly Mayan-speaking peoples who told the Spaniards of a powerful empire to the west. Although the Spaniards did not realize it, they had reached the outer limits of the Aztec Empire.

    Native Americans and the Spanish
Use of the land and minerals of New Mexico goes back to the prehistoric time of the early cultures in the Southwest that long preceded the flourishing sedentary civilization of the Pueblos that the Spanish found along the Rio Grande and its tributaries. Many of the Native American pueblos exist today much as they were in the 13th cent. Word of the pueblos reached the Spanish through Cabeza de Vaca, who may have wandered across S New Mexico between 1528 and 1536; they were enthusiastically identified by Fray Marcos de Niza as the fabulously rich Seven Cities of Cibola. Coronado . The treatment of the Pueblo people by Coronado and his men led to the long-standing hostility between the Native Americans and the Spanish and slowed Spanish conquest. History
The city has been the metropolis of Mexico since even before New Spain was created. It is built on the ruins of the Aztec city of Cortes in 1521. During the colonial period Mexico City served as the capital of the viceroyalty of New Spain and was for a time the cultural and social center of North and South America. It was taken in 1847 by Winfield Scott's American army, after an inland march from Veracruz in the Mexican War . The French army captured Mexico City in 1863, and Emperor Maximilian, crowned in 1864, did much to beautify it before it was recaptured by Mexicans under Benito Villa and Emiliano Zapata .
