To be sure, arts programs vary widely from school to school. Some schools specialize in the arts, with intensive classes in dance, theatre, music, and so forth. Some offer a strong arts program in connection with a more traditional curriculum. Other schools offer relatively little instruction in the arts. Selecting a program Finding a school which matches your interests requires some thought about the nature of your needs and goals and how they may change over time. Examine the facilities available - the theater, studios, practice rooms. If at all possible, consider campus visits. Meet or correspond with teachers in your area of interest. BY BRIAN DICKERSON FREE PRESS COLUMNIST Single-sex classrooms a phenomenon most Americans associate with uniformed Catholic students and boarding schools for the British upper classes have begun popping up in Michigan public schools, and defenders of the coed status quo are already circling their wagons. The Michigan Education Association has denounced teaching boys and girls separately as sexist and urged state legislators to oppose a bill that would sanction single-sex teaching experiments. Other critics see single-sex classrooms as the leading edge of a conservative effort to legitimize other kinds of segregation by demonstrating an educational benefit to minority students. If these reflexive naysayers would take a deep breath and do some homework, they might be surprised by what researchers have discovered about differences in the way boys and girls learn.

(1) This section shall be known and may be cited as the "blind pupil's Braille literacy law". (2) The department shall adopt Braille reading and writing standards for teachers of blind and visually impaired pupils and shall disseminate these standards to all school districts, intermediate school districts, and teacher preparation programs. These standards shall be included in the rules governing special education programs and services. In establishing these standards, the department shall consider the standards adopted by the national library service for the blind and physically handicapped of the United States library of congress. (3) When a local or intermediate school district receives information from the department, or information that is approved by the department from a consumer organization that advocates for the blind, describing the benefits of instruction in Braille reading and writing, the local or intermediate school district shall provide this information to each person on the blind pupil's individualized educational planning committee. (4) The department shall accept and respond to requests from local and intermediate school districts and shall work with textbook publishers to obtain electronic file format versions of textbooks or Braille versions of textbooks, or both. ABC was an innovative program launched in 1963 by 16 independent secondary schools to recruit and prepare minority group students for entry into exclusive boarding schools, elite colleges and universities, and ultimately positions of power and prestige in U.S. society. Corunna Public Schools / Shiawassee Street School Corunna Public Schools The Corunna School District was organized in 1842. Later that year a one-story frame school house was constructed. A teacher, Miss Cook was hired in 1843 and received the "unprecedented salary of $2.50 per week" and the "privilege of boarding 'round" in the community. In 1851 a two-story brick school was built to accommodate Corunna's growing population. A larger , three-story brick school was erected in 1866 just north of the schoolhouse. In the fall of 1882, both buildings burned. Another three-story brick school was constructed later that year to serve grades kindergarten through twelve. On April 14, 1908, that school burned. The present school was built that same year with funds from insurance policies and a city bond issue. Shiawassee Street School Edwyn A. Bowd of Lansing, an architect popular in the early twentieth century for his plans of public buildings, designed the Shiawassee Street School, which opened in January 1909. Rickman and Son, who built the Shiawassee County Courthouse in 1903 - 1904, constructed this school at a cost of $31,000. The Georgian Revival style school is trimmed in limestone. The bell in the cupola was cast in 1882 and donated by the Corunna Presbyterian Church upon the school's completion. The building served as an elementary school between 1952 and 1976, when it became the home of Community Education courses and the Corunna Public Schools Administrative Offices. This was the fifth school built on this site since 1842.
