FARMINGTON HILLS, MI (March 18, 2001) - The idea of traveling to Russia during the winter seems a chilling thought, but a host of Covenanters were warmed by the results of a recent short-term mission experience. Schools for the Gifted
The question is often asked, Are there special schools for gifted children? For highly gifted children? But there are few answers. This list attempts to be an answer, but comes with many caveats. First and foremost, schools are listed here by either their own or parent recommendations - this listing is in no way a recommendation for any specific school for a specific student. Some of these schools are public, some are private. Some test very strictly for gifted or highly gifted students; others are very specialized in their academics, and therefore draw such students without testing explicitly for the gifted. That said, at least this list is a beginning, a list of a few schools where at least some of our children can find a stimulating education, among other children like themselves. Also see our list of Early Entrance College Programs , programs specifically designed for the younger student ready for college level course work. And, don't miss this list of U.S. schools that specialize in LD students, often working well with gifted / LD students... LD Resources K-12 Schools with LD Programs, USA

    Boarding School Ministry Coordinator:
Woody Bowman Over the course of the last school year and through the summer, the Boarding School Ministry of FOCUS thrived regionally, but saw a slight lessening of student participation in major programs, especially during the summer. Regional retreats and InFOCUS meetings in New England and Virginia drew large numbers of of boarding students and fed back mightily into campus fellowships in the twenty-four schools in which FOCUS staff are actively and regularly involved. Eighty-two boarding school students attended summer programs in 2000, down eleven percent from the year before. Thirty-two schools were represented, primarily in New England and Virginia; five or more students came from Chatham Hall, Deerfield, Stony Brook, and Taft. Especially with the Y2K concerns and shortened programs, boarding students were in relatively short supply at the Winter House Parties, totaling just seventeen. The Boarding School Ministry works to assure that FOCUS is doing all that it can to support on-campus fellowships in boarding schools and to provide off-campus programs to which boarding school students and faculty can come. Our effort is to coordinate staff visits to boarding schools, maintain vital communication with chaplains, faculty, and student leaders, and follow up students who have participated in FOCUS programs.

Much of the positive development was directly related to three changes that allowed Boston FOCUS to provide a stronger and more solid base for ministry in the region: Sherry Morris was hired in September as Regional Staff to work with Dave Drake; Roberta Valentino, a parent of a Roxbury Latin student, came on board as administrative assistant in February, and a new office was found in Wellesley, larger and more convenient to our staff and more central to our activities. Notable Moments
  • Born: Oct. 31, 1860 Birthplace: Savannah, Ga. Education: Attended several prominent boarding schools Family background: From a prominent southern family; father was a Confederate General in the Civil War. Died: Jan. 17, 1927, age 66 (of cancer)
The Girl Scouting movement owes its success to many historical figures, one of the foremost of which is Juliette Gordon Low, who founded the Girl Scouts in 1912. Her vision, benevolence and fortitude has enabled thousands of girls to grow up into fine upstanding citizens. In 1911, while in Scotland, Daisy met Lord Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the British Boy Scouts. She became keenly interested in the scouting movement and during that year she organized a troop of Girl Guides (the female equivalent of the Boy Scouts) among poor girls at her estate at Glenlyon, Scotland. She later founded two more troops in London. Then on March 12, 1912, Daisy established the first troop of Girl Guides in the United States in her native Savannah, Georgia. Through her steadfast promotion the movement grew rapidly, becoming the Girl Scouts in 1913. The organization was incorporated in 1915 with the national headquarters at Washington, D.C. Daisy served as president until 1920 when she was bestowed the rightful title of founder. For fifteen years Daisy devoted time, energy and finances to the movement. She elicited major support and raised money throughout the U.S; she was a frequent guest at campfires. In an effort to expand her organization, she tried to merge with the Campfire Girls. The attempt failed, however due to administrative disputes. Daisy oversaw the composition of the Girl Scout handbook
