MICHIGAN CELEBRATES DIVERSITY, PROMOTES AWARENESS OF STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
February 14, 2000 On a day that means love to many people in the United States, schools in Michigan are sharing and showing their love for students with disabilities in a weeklong tribute. The state chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children kicked off its 12th annual Exceptional Children's Week Sunday, organizing events and awareness campaigns in schools across the state to emphasize that students with disabilities deserve both assistance and recognition for their unique qualities. The tribute began with a resolution by the State Senate back in 1989, as the legislators provided their official backing for organizations like the Michigan CEC that promote community knowledge, understanding and interest in exceptional children and youth. Through rallies and poster campaigns at schools of all levels, the annual event helps Michigan residents understand the potential students with disabilities have, as well as the opportunities and services that are available to those students to help them improve. The week includes a tribute to the winner of a state-wide poster contest in which students explained what friendship means to them. The winners poet Jason Rzadkowolski, of Sanilac ISD in Sandusky, and artist Garth Argue, of Clare-Gladwin Day School in Clare will be honored at the Michigan CEC convention in May.

Thomas Fleming received his master's degree in special education from Eastern Michigan University, where he serves as special assistant to the provost. His dedication to special education has been founded, in part, on his own experiences as a special education student. He began his teaching career more than 30 years ago at the Maxey Boys' Training School in Whitmore Lake, Mich. Earlier, he taught adolescents diagnosed as emotionally disturbed at Pontiac State Hospital and Ypsilanti State Hospital. Between 1969 and 1971, Fleming served as a consultant for the High Scope Educational Research Foundation, an early childhood education research program, in conjunction with the Chicago Public School System. In addition, he has been a teacher of history and government, serving students eligible for special education at the Washtenaw County Juvenile Detention School. Fleming was selected as the Michigan Teacher of the Year in 1991 and was the National Teacher of the Year in 1992. He holds an honorary doctorate in humane letters degree from the College of Misericordia in Dallas, Penn., and an honorary doctorate in education from Eastern Michigan University. He has also developed a literacy curriculum for application in the home and the community.

Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness   Michigan Waterfalls                       MCAH has a new web page! Come visit at www.mihomeless.org ! We will be gradually transferring material from this site to the new one. Please let us know what you think of the changes! Since its inception, eleven years ago, many conditions have changed for homeless service providers and the homeless in Michigan, this inevitably has had impact on the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness. This year the MCAH took on a major task in response to those changes, by commissioning a strategic planning/visioning process. Thank you to those of you that participated. Over the next three months you will see some changes in focus and structure as our new plan is implemented. The good news is that the office and phone number will remain the same during this transition, though on a modified basis. Several board members will be picking up the slack during this transition, so we expect no reduction in fundamental services to our members. Look for more news from MCAH as the plan is solidified. Thank you for your continued support. To contact us either click on to the Contact Us!
