The objective is to show you parts of Hawaii from space and the air, and then to show you ground photos of points of interest. While these trips have a strong geology flavor (the Virtually Hawaii Team has many geologists as members), we hope these tours will be used by educators at grade schools and community colleges for a variety of other types of projects. We have also found that many of our visitors who sign our Guest Book find these Virtual Field Trips to be useful in planning vacations in Hawaii."

  • Ellis Island
In this unit, students will visit Ellis Island sites to learn about the patterns and history of immigration in this country. These explorations will serve as a personal link for students to the historical importance of immigration in United States history.
  • Lesson One: Introduction to Immigration . Read and discuss selected resources about children and immigration. Children develop an understanding of the concept of immigration and reasons why people immigrate.
  • Lesson Two: Immigration Explorations, Part 1 . Organize students into research groups to visit sites on immigration that were created by other children. These sites will provide models for students to complete their own research.
  • Lesson Three: Internet Research . Using the criteria they developed earlier, students begin to collect and synthesize information on immigration.
  • Lesson Four: Creative Writing/Historical Journals . Having finished their primary and secondary research, students write a series of journal entries, from the perspective of an immigrant traveling to the United States via Ellis Island.
  • Lesson Five: Final Reports . Students write reports, including a summary of their research findings and their historical journal entries, to be shared with friends and families.

    http://www.mitalliance.org/program.htm
www.mitalliance.org Detroit Forum Program MIT Presenters Sponsors ... Contact Us Purpose of the Detroit Forum American cities are faced with problems, many of which seem intractable. The people responsible for problem resolution often find themselves in the middle of conflicting interest groups which could be motivated by information or history that may not be valid or even germane to the problem. As a result, a shared vision along with supporting strategies for problem solving cannot adequately be developed. MIT is represented in the Detroit region by more than a thousand alumni in top decision making positions and has the resources and reputation to be a trusted resource for solving many of our cities’ problems. Moreover, a number of MIT faculty and alumni have demonstrated a mastery in understanding the nature of complex urban problems including the work of such well known figures as Dr. Phillip Clay ’75 (Chancellor, MIT), Dr. George Galster ‘74 (Hilberry Professor of Urban Studies, WSU), and Professor John Sterman (Jay W. Forrester Professor of Management, MIT Sloan School of Management). The intention of MIT in sponsoring this event is to aid to cities in resolving their policy dilemmas. Accordingly, MIT faculty and alumni represent a unique resource and offer urban planners a perspective that is both analytical and neutral. By addressing problems through these mechanisms, it is possible to develop a shared vision and to create and implement the strategies necessary for removing the impediments which prohibit achieving that vision.
