Michigan ranks fourth in the nation for start-ups. Inc. magazine's annual almanac of "Where the Start-ups Are" puts Ann Arbor as Number 4, with 1.69 start-ups per 100 inhabitants.
Detroit ranks fifth in the nation in terms of the gross number of metro start-ups. Again, Inc. magazine reports Detroit as Number 5, following such hot spots as Los Angeles-Long Beach, New York City, Houston, and Dallas.
Detroit had 35,226 start-ups in 1997.
Among Inc.’s reported top 100 metro areas by start-up rate are:
  • Ann Arbor (#4)
  • Kalamazoo (#13)
  • Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland (#28)
  • Flint (#33)
  • Detroit (#39)
  • Lansing-East Lansing (#43)
  • Saginaw-Bay City-Midland (#70)
  • (Such areas as Cleveland, Chicago, Boston and St. Louis did not make the top 100.)
Michigan is home to more than 5,000 information technology companies. More than 3,000 software firms are located within the state, as are other telecommunications and multimedia companies. Michigan is the headquarters of the seventh largest information technology company in the world (Compuware), as ranked by Fortune magazine. (Compuware is ranked one above mighty Microsoft.)

    GIS
GIS-Geographic Information Systems-is a label used to cluster the techniques that study space through the collection and analysis of electronically generated data. Employed at first by geographers, urban planners, and demographers, more recently GIS has drawn the attention of humanists, from art critics to historians and literary scholars. By plotting on a virtual map layers of data that are identifiable with spatial coordinates, GIS is allowing scholars to handle vast data sets, and to problematize space and its properties.
Thanks to a grant from the Office of the Vice President for Research, now in its third year, CES and the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies (in collaboration with the China Data Center/Map Library and the International Institute) have supported over 80 researchers and graduate students.
UM faculty and Rob Haug, GIS Research Associate at CES, have been working on the following research and instructional projects.
    Mapping Arabia:

    Michael Bonner
, Middle Eastern Studies and History The Mapping Arabia project seeks to apply GIS to the study of the premodern Islamic Middle East, and to a specific set of historical and historiographical problems regarding the rise of Islam in Arabia. This project's specific context is the Arabian peninsula in the period before, during and just after the rise of Islam, roughly 500-800 CE, aiming to reconstruct aspects of the political economy of late antique and early Islamic Arabia, through the toponymical identification and visualization of trade routes, goods exchanged, sanctuaries, and pilgrimages sites. The researchers have started from the assumption that, besides allowing them to reconstruct more accurately the paths of trade and religious practices in the region, the visualization and mapping of information through GIS will lead to the formulation of original interpretive questions.

SUNNY DAYS AT THE STOCK EXCHANGE GIVE LIFT TO MARKET, STUDY SAYS
COLUMBUS, Ohio - When the sun is shining on Wall Street, it does more than put the brokers in a good mood - it also gives a lift to the stock market. David Hirshleifer A new study has found that morning sunshine at the sites of 26 leading stock exchanges around the world - including the New York Stock Exchange - is linked to positive market returns that day. The results showed that the daily difference in expected market returns between a completely overcast day and a sunny day is nine basis points (0.088 percent), or an annualized excess return of 24.8 percent.
This study is part of a new trend in finance in which researchers go beyond the purely rational, economic factors that govern the stock market.
"There's a great deal of evidence from psychology that sunshine helps put people in a good mood, and people in good moods make more optimistic choices and judgments," said
