National PTA Receives Funding for After-school Initiative National PTA has received a two-year, $234,000 grant from The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation for projects that educate and motivate parents to be advocates for after-school programs. According to a recent report by the Afterschool Alliance, more than 28 million children have parents who work outside the home, and as many as 15 million children have no place to go once the school day ends. The Mott grant will support National PTA's efforts to assess its members' awareness and perceptions surrounding after-school programs and help them provide parents with the tools and resources necessary to evaluate and improve current programs, and to work together with school and community personnel to establish new after-school programs. An important component of the project will be to provide resources in Spanish as part of National PTA's Hispanic Outreach Initiative. Parents are attracted to after-school programs because they can provide help with ever-increasing academic requirements as well as opportunities for creative enrichment and physical activity in a safe atmosphere while parents are at work.
