The Department of Education (DOE) provides financial aid to eligible institutions on behalf of eligible students in the form of Federal Pell grants, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants and Federal Family Education Loans. In order for a student to be eligible to receive federal financial aid, the student must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent - a General Educational Development (GED) certificate, or has obtained a passing score on an independently administered test. For a school to qualify to receive DOE funds it must obtain a state licensor and accreditation by a recognized accrediting organization and must agree to follow all of the DOE regulations relating to the disbursement and accounting of DOE funds.

Students Groups Student Resources University of Michigan School of Education GRADUATE STUDENT COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION Purpose/Goals To help to create and sustain a graduate student community. To support students in the process of navigating the School of Education by making more explicit its mores and informal procedures as well as its formal rules and regulations. Brief History The School of Education Graduate School Community Organization (SOE-GSCO) grew out of the earlier "Building Bridges" SOE symposium and meetings with the previous Associate Dean, Annemarie Palincsar. Students felt the need to build community, gain representation within the SOE governance, and create a vehicle of both social and academic cross-pollination. In the 2001-2002 academic year the SOE-GSCO hosted several activities such as the end of year potluck and the pre-AERA conference practice presentation extravaganza. The pre-AERA practice session helped several graduate students prepare talks and get valuable feedback. It also provided exposure to the various types research being conducted by students throughout the School of Education. The group meets monthly, and is planning activities for Fall and Winter semesters, including the presentation session and social activities. The SOE-GSCO will give a presentation at the Fall Connection for incoming students. One of the goals of this organization is to provide the opportunity for graduate students to learn more about how the SOE works, and become active participants. All graduate students are part of the graduate school community and are encouraged to attend meetings and events. Each academic program has representatives from the graduate student community for each unit. Currently, these are not elected positions, and the SOE-GSCO is in the process of developing the infrastructure to support the election of individuals to the positions for the 2002-2003 academic year.

Charter schools are surging ahead as a reform movement. More than half the states now have legislation allowing charter schools and the number opening has tripled in the last two years. The enthusiasm could wane in the next few years and the number of charter schools dwindle or never amount to a sizeable movement. But the more pressing questions are how much autonomy they have and how accountable and effective they are. Charter schools first emerged when the state legislature in Minnesota passed a law allowing them in 1991. Charter schools are public and nonsectarian. They cannot ban any child from attending and they cannot charge tuition. For some charter schools in states with older laws, a reckoning is looming since five years is the most common deadline for renewal. One of the biggest issues that states will have to examine is the accountability required in exchange for the autonomy granted to charter schools. States with expansive laws, like Michigan and Arizona, cut the red tape and allow charter schools a lot of leeway. States with restrictive laws, like Hawaii and Rhode Island, discourage applicants because of all the hoops they must jump through to get a permit. In such states, charter schools have to apply for waivers from regulations and they must abide by collective bargaining agreements and are considered legally dependent on school districts. A study commissioned by the U.S. Department of Education shows that states with restrictive laws have fewer charter schools than states with more expansive ones. Hawaii had only two schools, compared to the 103 listed for Arizona in the federal report, although both passed laws in 1994. The ratio of half expansive and half restrictive laws has remained consistent since charter schools first emerged, says longtime charter school advocate Ted Kolderie.

Site Map The Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP) is a voluntary agricultural pollution prevention program which ensures that participating producers use effective land stewardship practices that comply with environmental regulations. MAEAP was created in May 1998 by a coalition of agriculture producers and agencies, in response to recommendations in the Michigan Agricultural Pollution Prevention Strategy Report. Through MAEAP, a voluntary, education-based approach is used to achieve various environmental goals, these goals include: · Solving environmental pollution problems · Preventing pollution at its source · Maintaining and enhancing natural resources · Monitoring and recording changes in producers management practices · Providing incentives for participation · Encouraging sharing of technological information · Rewarding accomplishment through award recognition A systems approach was taken to assist producers in evaluating their farms for environmental risk. Each system examines a portion of a farming operation. By breaking a farm down into one of three different systems, a farmer has the opportunity to focus on distinct segments of their operation that may currently have the greatest environmental impact in their operation.
