Michigan Geography Vocabulary Lesson Plan
Grade level: 4th grade.
Materials: A map of the U.S., a map of Michigan, and a blank map for the evaluation.
Procedure:
Show a map of the U.S. and ask if the students know where Michigan is on the map. Have someone point it out.
Tell the students the Michigan motto: If you seek a pleasant
peninsula, look about you. Ask for the definition of what a peninsula is. Give the definition: a body of land surrounded on 3 sides by water. Show the Upper and Lower Peninsulas on a map.
Show the Great Lakes on the map, and explain how they can remember them by the acronym of HOMES: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior.
Point out some of the larger islands that belong to Michigan:
Mackinac, Beaver, Isle Royale, Manitou and Drummond.
Talk about the Mackinac Bridge that now connects the 2 peninsulas.
Inform them that Michigan also has more than 11,000 inland lakes, many rivers and 1 mountain range (Porcupine Mountains). Point out where the mountain range is on the map.
Evaluation: Have a blank map of the state of Michigan and have the students label it with the places that were discussed above.

Geography 470: Urban Geography
For this assignment you will be using an interactive mapping and statistics application called the DDViewer. Your task is to use the DDViewer in order to investigate patterns of Urban Morphology in the United States. You must use the DDViewer to map about a half dozen different, major US cities. Pick only three that you like and compare and contrast the urban morphologies that you see. You should attempt to characterize the three cities that you pick in terms of the three urban morphology models discussed in class. Explain why you see what you see in the cities. Experiment. Be creative. Be insightful. Show me what you have learned in a one to three page report on your investigation of three major cities’ urban morphology. I suggest you do these exercises on campus if you do not have a fast modem at home. If you need, come to my office hours for help on these assignments. To open multiple browser windows, click on File and Select “New” or simply press Ctrl and N at the same time. Use Shift +Tab to move between open applications and multiple browser windows.

Acme Davison Jackson Port Huron ... Plymouth MICHIGAN - Geography Upper midwestern state of the United States. It consists of two peninsulas thrusting into the Great Lakes and has borders with Ohio and Indiana (S), Wisconsin (W), and the Canadian province of Ontario (N,E). The Lower Peninsula, shaped like a mitten, is separated from Ontario, Canada, on the east by Lake Erie and Lake Huron, and by the Detroit River and the St. Clair River, which together link these two Great Lakes. It is bordered by Lake Michigan on the west, across which lies Wisconsin. The Upper Peninsula lies northeast of Wisconsin between Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, and is separated from Ontario by the narrow St. Marys River. The Upper Peninsula is separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac; a bridge connecting the two peninsulas was opened in 1957 and has spurred the development of the Upper Peninsula. The eastern portion of the Upper Peninsula has swampy flats and limestone hills on the Lake Michigan shore, while sandstone ridges rise abruptly from the rough waters of Lake Superior; in the west the land rises to forested mountains, still rich in copper and iron.
