The Geography Michigan is split into two peninsulas: the Upper Peninsula and the Lower Peninsula. The Upper Peninsula is bordered by Wisconsin and Ontario. The Lower Peninsula is bordered by Ontario but also Indiana and Ohio. The only thing separating the two is The Straits of Mackinac. The Upper Peninsula is very elevated. This is where Mount Curwood is located. It reaches 1,980 feet (604 meters) high. But the Upper Peninsula only makes up one fourth the size of the Lower Peninsula. The Lower Peninsula is made of little glacial hills and valleys. It is in the shape of a large mitten with lakes on all sides. Only the southwest corner of the state is fit for farming and the rivers around it help with the irrigation.

The Landscape Architecture Program is an undergraduate accredited program, with origins dating back to 1865 when landscape gardening (a design course) was a required course for students. The term, landscape architecture was first used at michigan State University in 1898, as a degree option in the Department of Horticulture. Today the Landscape Architecture Program is affiliated with the Department of geography, College of Social Science at michigan State University.

Landscape Architecture: the Profession
Landscape Architecture is the design profession which applies artistic, cultural, scientific, and technical knowledge and skills to the analysis, design, planning, development, and management of the land. Landscape architects accept certain responsibilities related to the health, safety, and welfare of the public and are concerned with resource conservation and stewardship of the land. The practice of landscape architecture requires an appreciation and understanding of natural and social processes, a creative imagination, technical expertise, and a commitment to preserve or improve the physical environment for optimum human use and enjoyment. Landscape architects are employed by private professional offices, public planning agencies, land development companies, industrial or commercial firms, educational and research institutions, park and recreation authorities, and a variety of other organizations which require land use planning and site design services. The landscape architect's professional activities include consultations with clients, resource inventories and site analyses, site development programming, development of design concepts and land use proposals, provision of design implementation drawings and specifications, preparation of contracts and reports, and supervision of projects under construction. The landscape architect often collaborates with other professionals, including architects, engineers, naturalists, geographers, and planners, in the design and development of urban and rural land areas.

Quick profile: I am a geographer specializing in Geographic Information Systems and the legal environment of GIS, land ownership, and natural resource applications. My current research includes a study of land ownership parcelization (parcel subdivision) and forest cover change in a forested region in Northern Lower Michigan (NLM).
Research Summary: Crawford, Grand Traverse, and Kalkaska Counites are three rural counties located within NLM that have exhibited rapid population growth trends over the last thirty years. Many local authorities have cited residential, seasonal home, and tourism-based platting and development as drivers of landscape fragmentation and forest degeneration. However, according to the latest USFS forest inventory, the three counties have exhibited significant trends of forest regeneration and growth over the same time period. My research looks into the counter intuitive nature of the observed trends and tries to determine the actual relationships between land ownership parcelization and forest cover change within these areas.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH As my professional career has developed, I have become increasingly concerned with environmental geology and increasingly active in environmental geology projects. I am most interested in watershed geomorphology, including issues related to flooding, sediment delivery to streams, land use, and their ecological, societal, and political implications. The Stony Creek Watershed Project, SE Michigan Together with the Water Resources Consortium at EMU, I am participating in the Stony Creek Watershed Project The main purpose of the project is to develop a management plan for the Stony Creek Watershed. One of the issues of interest in this designated trout stream is the high rate of sediment input and flooding problems that probably relate to current land use.

36. Michigan's Geography
michigan is divided into two peninsulas. The Straits of Mackinac, a narrow waterwayjoining Lakes michigan and Huron, separates the two peninsulas.
http://svweb.nsd.org/nakastudpag/twentymi/geography.html
Michigan is divided into two peninsulas. The Upper Peninsula borders Wisconsin and the Canadian province of Ontario. The Lower Peninsula also borders Ontario, as well as the states of Indiana and Ohio. The Straits of Mackinac, a narrow waterway joining Lakes Michigan and Huron, separates the two peninsulas. The Mackinal Bridge, one of the world's longest suspension bridges joins the two peninsulas.
The Lower Peninsula is shaped like a giant mitten. Its mitten-shape was carved out 2,500 years ago by glaciers. As the glaciers melted, the water filled the holes forming the Great Lakes, the largest freshwater lakes in the world. The glaciers also created thousands of smaller lakes, including Houghton, Saint Clair, and Gogebic. Much of the Lower Peninsula is fairly level, but some parts are rolling and hilly. Parts of the North-central Lower Peninsula rise 1,200 to 1,400 feet above sea level. Many high bluffs and sand dunes border Lake Michigan. The state's lowest point, 572 feet above the sea level is along the shore of Lake Erie. The southern half of the Lower Peninsula is the only part of the state has good farmland and the longest growing season in the state. Grand River, in the Lower Peninsula, is the longest river in the state.
The Upper Peninsula, also called the Northern Peninsula, is the mountainous area of Michigan. The highest point in the entire state of Michigan is Mount Curwood, 604 meters (1,980 ft.) in the Huron Mountains followed by the Porcupine Mountains, 597 meters (1,958 ft.), both located in the western half of the Upper Peninsula. The Upper Peninsula is only one-forth the size of the Lower Peninsula. It has an average elevation of 213 meters (700 ft.).

, Associate Professor, proudly announced in his professional practice course the birth of his first granddaughter. After an appropriate interval, the class proceeded to a designated establishment for the celebration of that special event. His work continues at Binder Park Zoo for the summer youth construction program. Each year since 1984 between two and five LA students supervise up to 50 local high school students in construction of up to $300,000 worth of improvements. As a result of a successful $12.5 million fund raising effort, the youth construction program will extend to the year 2002. In 1993 he received the state of Michigan Services Award from Governor Engler for his work with youth at Binder Park Zoo.

, Associate Professor, has completed work on the medical degree and is now officially a doctor2. She recently completed an eight-week visit with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, studying aging and dementia in Alzheimers patients. She reports that NIH is very progressive in the areas of alternative and rehabilitation medicine so concepts like "wellness gardens" are well received by many researchers and physicians at the Institutes. She hopes to establish a collaborative research agenda with the National Institute on aging for the purpose of studying design efficacy for adult day care, Alzheimers, and special population facilities. Dr. Westphal was awarded a Merit Award in Planning and Landscape Analysis from the Michigan Chapter of ASLA this spring for work on the Old Mission Peninsula. She will be on sabbatical next year.
