The Michigan Department of Education's Curriculum Unit provides leadership and services to help schools improve teaching and learning in English Language Arts, Fine Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. In Michigan, no two school districts have exactly the same economic or student base. Rather than defining a one-size fits all curriculum that could not consider the unique needs of all districts and students, in 1995, the Michigan State Board of Education approved model content standards for curriculum. These content standards were developed by parents, educators, business leaders and university professors and provide descriptions of what students should know and be able to do in subject areas. In addition, benchmarks (learning objectives) where drafted for each of the content areas to further clarify the content standards. The standards and benchmarks are not a state curriculum, but are specifically designed to be used by local districts as they develop their curricula. These standards and benchmarks are contained in the Michigan Curriculum Framework The Framework is a resource for helping Michigan’s public and private schools design, implement, and assess their curricula.

Or: If you'd like just to know more about the so-called "Information Highway" first, click here (Note also that this page uses a technique where you may be advised to click on a link and then use any "find" option your browser may have to locate a certain phrase, to reach the exact point in question in a page that has no suitable anchors.)
Why should my school use computers?
There are three reasons:
  • They can bring a whole world of information to the students.
  • That information can involve students more in learning, making them active learners (in the Piaget tradition) and involved in outreach projects with the real world.

Question 1: Do you want the best for your child?
Question 2: Do you belong to a Christian church?
If you answered "yes" to both of these questions, congratulations! You're fully qualified to send your child to a Holland Christian School ... just as qualified as its founders were a century ago. You see, Holland Christian wasn't started in a corporate board room or by a legislative act. In 1901, Holland Christian School was started in a church, by parents a lot like you - parents seeking an education for their children that was saturated in Christian values, guided by Biblical principles, driven by academic excellence, and delivered by a loving, committed staff.
Those parental founders were not just involved in their children's education. They owned it. The same holds true for the parents of our students today. Read on to discover how our unique approach to education transforms education into the loving, learning environment we'd like to share with your child. Our Logo
To understand Holland Christian's approach to education, just start with our logo. Since its development over a generation ago, this symbol has stood as a quiet illustration of our school system. However, this emblem is much more than a fancy triangle. Packed with rich meaning, a deeper study of this graphic reveals the very core of Holland Christian.

Imagining Your Ideal School: An Exercise for Setting Priorities Every family has different needs and priorities when choosing a school. This quick exercise will help you sort through the school characteristics that are most important to you and your child. Click here to read this article in Spanish. By Victoria Thorp, GreatSchools.net Staff Figuring out exactly what you want in a school is not a simple task. When you imagine the ideal school for your child, you may picture colorful classrooms, dynamic teachers and a variety of extracurricular programs. But when you really start to weigh your options, you'll probably discover several practical constraints as well. For example, you may want to find a school that's near your child care provider or close to your workplace. If you have more than one child, you may want them to attend the same school even if they seem suited for different environments. Step-by-Step Guide Get a printable worksheet for this exercise here. Use this guide to consider all these important elements side by side. You might even invite your child to join you in this brainstorming process, especially if he has already attended school and has some ideas about what's important to him. Step 1: Brainstorm.

It is very important to read the funder's guidelines carefully before submitting an application! Make sure that your project and the grantor's initiatives go hand-in-glove with one another! Note:
My time is very limited due to preparing for and conducting workshops and preparation of grant proposals. Grant opportunities listed on these page were accurate at the time they were researched and posted. However, the economic downturn has caused many grantors to re-evaluate their funding priorities.
