Science SOARs (K-12 Education)
See the Michigan Gateways Television Programs (#501, #502, and #504) which show some of our early planning and how we do astronomy.
MSU's participation in the SOAR telescope will create a link between scientific discovery, education, and outreach. K-12 students and citizens of Michigan will be able to experience and participate in ongoing astronomical research projects in the schools and through outreach programs.
A partnership, called Science SOARs, will be established between the K-12 teachers in the state, MSU faculty in Physics-Astronomy and Teacher Education, Abrams Planetarium, and museums and science centers.
Science SOARs will
create lessons based on primary scientific data, so that students will feel the excitement of discovery as the original scientist did and understand the process and context of scientific inquiry,
train teachers to think about science as a human endeavor and to use these new lessons effectively, thereby augmenting and enhancing the material currently in use in the K-12 schools,
cultivate direct contacts between individual students and teachers and the SOAR telescope and

Consistent policy for quality schools
January 28, 2003 Your Jan. 24 editorial "Tax Choices: Give Granholm time to develop own budget strategy" implied that I have changed my position on taxes because I am employed by an intermediate school district and am no longer the Senate majority leader. An examination of my record in the Legislature would show that to be false. During my time in the Legislature, I was an advocate for ensuring schools adequate resources to provide quality education. In the early 1990s, when Michigan faced large deficits, K-12 education was not cut. During the rest of the '90s, K-12 education received generous increases. Finally, in the closing months of 2002, the Legislature, while I was Senate majority leader, raised the cigarette tax rather than cut K-12 education. Given that record, it is hardly surprising that I feel the Legislature should look at expanding the base of sales tax, rather than forcing a cut of more than $360 million next year. Schools have received a 3.8-percent cut this year, and that is a fair cut in light of the economic times. However, if forced to absorb all of a cut of more than $360 million next year, students will not receive a quality education. Avoiding at least a portion of that cut is consistent with the policies of the last 12 years.
