Students at the school say the structured schedule leaves them little time to be anything but organized and disciplined, which helps improve their grades. Military schools are making a comeback. Two new schools are in the works, existing institutions report a spike in applications and even America's most famous liberal politician, Oakland, Calif., Mayor Jerry Brown, is espousing military-style education as a remedy for troubled schools in his city. The AP Military schools making a comeback
The Associated Press FORK UNION, Va. (AP) Military schools, with their square notions of crisp uniforms and strict discipline, were once as trendy as a buzz cut. In 1950, there were 160 of the institutions nationwide. Today, there are just 40, but their concept and their enrollment is making a comeback.

Orchard Lake Schools
Orchard Lake Schools Orchard Lake Schools Historic District comprises eleven buildings constructed between 1858 and 1924. The oldest, a massive Romanesque Revival house resembling a Norman Castle, was built in 1858 by one-time Michigan Supreme Court Justice Joseph Tarr Copeland. In 1877 Copeland sold the property to Joseph Summer Rodgers, who established the Michigan Military Academy on the site. Six of nine structures built in a quadrangle reflect the Romanesque Revival style. In 1909 the school once considered "the leading military institution in the country, outside of West Point." closed. The site was sold to Saint Cyril and Methodius Seminary, the nation's first Polish seminary. Father Joseph Dabrowski founded the seminary in 1885 in Detroit. The present complex, evolved from the seminary, includes Saint Mary's Preparatory School and Saint Mary's College. Joseph Tarr Copeland Maine native Joseph Tarr Copeland (1813 - 1893) graduated from Harvard College and studied law before coming to Michigan during the 1840s. In 1851 he was elected circuit court judge serving concurrently on the Michigan Supreme Court. Upon his retirement in 1858, he built this house. At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 he was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in the First Michigan Calvary. Within a year he rose to brigadier general. Copeland retired to his home in 1865. With a group of Pontiac investors Copeland enlarged his house, creating the Orchard Lake Hotel. From this site tourists boarded the

The first school house was constructed of logs in the southwest part of the township. There were 5 pupils in attendance and the school was taught by Olive Poole, who received a salary of $1.25 per week. In July, 1854 District #5 in the village was organized and school was conducted in the home of Harvey Tomblin. Andoinette Stoughten was the teacher for District #5. Two years later, in 1857, the first school house in the village was erected by William Shepard on the lot where the old Catholic Church now stands.

Lt. Col. Eric Peterson and wife Michelle meet at 3-year-old daughter Sarah's preschool at Quantico's Ashurst Elementary. Daughter Ivy, 5, leaps into Dad's arms. The Marine Corps base's schools "celebrate the fact the children come from military families," says Eric Peterson. Base schools cater to student body where everyone is a newcomer
QUANTICO, Va. When lunchtime rolls around at Ashurst Elementary School, baritones tumble above children's peals in the cafeteria, where burly, hardened Marines in green camouflage sit scrunched into small chairs at low tables. In the middle of a workday, they are eating with their kids. Two of Lt. Col. Eric Peterson's four children attend class in this red brick schoolhouse on a wooded corner of the Quantico Marine Corps Base. On the wall of his first-grader's classroom, a poster lists the names of the 23 classmates and the cities and bases where they had lived before Quantico. All of the children had three or four places below their names. If it weren't for the schools, the Petersons would have no interest in living on base, squeezing six people into a 1,280-square-foot duplex with three bedrooms and two tiny bathrooms.

Traditional Indian Education
The traditional way through which Native American children were educated for the responsibilities that they would assume as adults was by working with and imitating their elders. There was no "school" as it was understood by nineteenth century Europeans. Rather, children were allowed to roam freely throughout the community stopping and asking questions when and where they pleased. Children would work companionably alongside their parents or other adults, helping in small ways and gaining confidence and ability in various skills. Children often engaged in what the Dakota referred to as "small play," impersonating adults and mimicking their activities, conversations, and manners. Grandparents played a very important role in the education of children. Grandmothers, for example, bore responsibility for making girls "well behaved women." A grandmother would take it upon herself to tutor her granddaughter in the subtleties of daily life, such as how to move, how to interact with elders, where to sit at ceremonial occasions. In the evening it was common to send a daughter to her grandmother bearing a gift of food or tobacco. The gift was an invitation to the grandmother to instruct the child in the tribe's traditions that would help the girl understand both her place in the tribe and her people's place in the world.

The Military Science program is built around four core values:
  • Integrity Academic excellence Selfless service, and Military proficiency Participation in the NMU Military Science program has a profound impact on any student whether through a single class, fulfilling the military science minor, or earning the Presidential Commission of a U.S. Army Officer. The program emphasizes problem solving, leadership and self-confidence development, and ethics. Military science complements any student's major by broadening their educational experience as well as providing a valuable academic minor. Students who enroll in military science classes incur no military obligation, nor do they commit themselves to continue taking military science courses (until they commit to earning the Presidential Commission of a U.S. Army Officer in the Active Army, Army Reserves, or Army National Guard). Students may add, drop, or withdraw from military science courses as in any other academic program.

Burroughs, the creator of the Tarzan character through numerous novels which were later translated to the movie and television screens, would scribble the phrase in a journal he kept during his five years as a cadet and teacher at the Michigan Military Academy.
