Military Research on the Internet
Matthew D. Bird
From Army History Issue 33, Winter 1995 The Interneta global network of computers at government sites, libraries, and universities around the worldcan be a valuable research tool for the military scholar. Internet users can "visit" museums and military academies remotely, participate in electronic discussions on topics of interest, search the library catalogs of hundreds of libraries around the world, and retrieve press releases, photographs, and sound recordings. There are virtual libraries and online reading rooms accessible twenty-four hours a day on the Internet, through which users can read and retrieve portions of dictionaries, encyclopedias, speeches, classic books, and other information. Internet users can also obtain the full text of historical documents such as the Magna Carta, the Mayflower Compact, the colonial Military Instructions of 1636, the U.S. Constitution, the German and Japanese surrender documents of 1945, the Tonkin Gulf Resolution of 1964, and many others.
  • "Visit" military sites on the Internet such as NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) or the Military Academy at West Point, New York, and browse their offerings.

Greater West Bloomfield Historical Society to publish Them Was the Days by Brian Bohnett: ABOUT THE BOOK: In 1877, an idea - formed in the mind of 33-year-old Army Major, J. Sumner Rogers - became a reality. The Michigan Military Academy. From the early beginnings as the retirement residence of former Michigan Supreme Court Justice, Joseph Tarr Copeland, to its final days and bankruptcy, this book covers the brief 30-year life of a school once deemed "the West Point of the West." More than just a history of the school, this volume - illustrated with over 100 photos and illustrations - contains anecdotes and hands-on accounts from the cadets, faculty and others who played a part in the school's history, giving the reader a flavor of what it was like to be at a 19th century military school... located on the picturesque shores of Orchard Lake.

Met in Kentucky (Alma was an Army nurse at the time), then Joseph was sent to Germany for three years and they corresponded long distance. After a few years of juggling duty stations they decided it was too complicated for both to have military careers. Holley was born in Michigan; Joale was born in Philadelphia. How are things different for you than a civilian family? Since we move so often, we need to be open to new possibilities. You learn to start from scratch every few years. For example, keeping connected to family becomes more complicated; we take lots of photos and videos of the kids to send back home! Challenges?

The Boy Scouts in the 1910s were an idea, not an organization. There were Boy Scouts in America even before the Boy Scouts of America were founded, and there were many other Boy Scout groups that functioned totally independent of the Boy Scouts of America. The Boy Scouts of America, however, were dominant from the beginning, and by the end of the decade had essentially eliminated all competitors.

THE LONE SCOUTS OF AMERICA:
The founder of the Boy Scouts of America, W. D. Boyce, grew dissatisfied with the group very early in the decade and left the movement. In 1915, he started another group intended for boys who lived in isolation and could not join Boy Scout troops. This group, called the Lone Scouts of America, was unified solely by means of publications, most notably a weekly paper called "Lone Scout" that was filled with stories and recommended projects. The group was extrememly successful, and ultimately merged with the Boy Scouts of America in the early 1920s.

Military Brat Life
Still Looking for Home
by Lisa Anderschat A while ago I wrote about my search for a place to set down roots to call home. Well, I made the move to a place where my parents have never been, and I am trying to make it my own. I am a residence hall coordinator at Michigan Technological University in Houghton MI. I am 14 hours from my parents and 10 hours from the one place I really want to visit a lot. I think this move was a good stepping stone for me. So often we brats are trying to get that feeling of home back, now I realize it is up to me to create that feeling of home where ever I am. For the first time I don't have any roommates. I have my own apartment (located within the residence hall, so I have like 630 neighbors) and I can make the place look like the way I want it to . . . my favorite pictures finally on the wall, my own dishes in the cupboard. There are times when I am lonely and miss my family . . . but this is my time to make my mark and I am going to do my best to enjoy the time I have here in Michigan . . . Military Brat Life
Where is Home?
by Lisa Anderschat I am struggling to find a place to consider home. When people ask me where I am from I ask them "Do you want to know where I was born, where I went to high school, or where I went to college?" I have many identities based on different locations. West Point New York is my place of birth. Cincinnati, Ohio is where I went to high school and Holland Michigan is where I went to college. As I finish up graduate school and go on job interviews I find myself looking at those areas of the country where I have not lived, searching for that place that will give me the feeling of home. There are two places that I feel a real connection to; Colorado, where we lived for two years after returning from Germany and Holland, Michigan where I went to college. I try to explain to my friends what it is about that town that draws me and they don't understand. They are all trying to get me to move past the one place where I feel at home. My friends and even my brother cannot relate to my quest. They have roots firmly planted in one area or another and they feel comfortable returning to those areas after graduation. Will I have a perpetual case of wanderlust? I find myself at a point in my life when I would like to find a place where I can plant roots and stay a spell.
