School Library Media Certification/Endorsement The University of Michigan School of Information (SI) offers a program of courses that will enable students to meet the requirements for endorsement in School Library Media. The SI program is designed for those who want to earn an ALA-accredited master's degree, with or without teaching certification. The total number of credit hours required for the endorsement is 30 credits. The School offers only a major, requiring 30 credit hours, and will no longer offer a 20-credit minor endorsement. The curriculum plan below lists courses that provide a teaching field major in library media and leads to employment in schools in Michigan and most other states at the K-12 level. The major is added as an endorsement to a current teaching certificate. The teaching certificate may be earned prior to entry to the School of Information or it may be earned concurrently. Prospective students who do not already have a teaching certificate should expect to extend their program of study to take 20 hours of professional education from the U-M School of Education in addition to the credits taken for the media specialist certification. Fall is the only term in which students are admitted to this program.

Did they make the right decision? A new study indicates that what they made was a big mistake! According to a recent study conducted by Colorado's Library Research Service (LRS), students at schools with strong media centers scored significantly higher on standardized tests than students at schools with less-well-equipped and staffed libraries. The results of the study, which examined the relationship between the Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP) and certain characteristics of school media centers, replicated those of earlier studies conducted in Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Alaska.
