Conceptual Framework for Teacher Education: The Unbroken Circle
The Education Unit, in cooperation with other academic units, prepares students for teaching at the preschool, elementary, and secondary levels. Entrance into the College does not guarantee admission to the teacher certification program. Students must make a separate application to the teacher certification program. Prior to admission to the certification program, undergraduates will be assigned an advisor who will assist in planning the sequence of certification courses. Students must have a certifiable major and minor and adhere to the certification requirements as listed below in order to obtain teacher certification.
Accreditation
Marygrove has the approval of the State of Michigan Department of Education for its certification programs. Students in early childhood education obtain the Early Childhood endorsement (ZA). The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) currently accredits the undergraduate/post-degree teacher education program.

    Mission
We prepare students to create the future.
Teacher Preparation Programs: Every education student at Michigan Technological University (MTU) is required to obtain an academic major and minor in his or her chosen field of study. In nearly every case, the rigor and major program are the same as that of the non-education majors. In addition, students at Michigan Technological University gain a wide range of real-world, practical classroom experiences that prepare them for the realities of the modern, technologically oriented classroom. This dedication to content and method means that our graduates have the knowledge to successfully begin a teaching career. The Department of Education program, in cooperation with the academic departments, provides professional course work in secondary teacher preparation for persons receiving either the Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, physics, biology, geology, mathematics, computer science, or engineering or a Bachelor of Arts in English or social studies. Student Characteristics Ninety-one percent of MTU's undergraduates are of traditional college age, 91% attend full-time, 77% are Michigan residents, and 79% are engineering, mathematics or science majors. The average ACT score for fall 1999 freshmen was 25.21.

At Northern Michigan University, we understand this. When we opened our doors in 1899, it was as the region’s teacher certification institution. Throughout our more than 100 years, teaching teachers has remained one of Northern’s most important roles. In fact, education ranks as our top major, and more than 10 percent of our undergraduate student population is enrolled in elementary, secondary, or special education programs. High academic standards, innovative teaching practices, and close relationships with schools and practicing teachers make NMU a strong choice for pursuing a career in education. $1.3 million federal grant will help UM-Dearborn, HFCC and Dearborn Public Schools prepare teachers for non-English speaking students
DEARBORN-A five-year $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to the University of Michigan-Dearborn will help Dearborn's public schools respond to the needs of their students who have limited proficiency in English. In Dearborn, the seventh largest school district in Michigan, more than half of the students are Arab or Arab American, and nearly a third of the students are not native English speakers. Many of those students are recent immigrants with interruptions in their schooling. "This program is designed to provide an effective program of professional development for teachers that will multiply Dearborn's capacity to educate this population," according to John Poster, dean of the School of Education at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. "The number of students needing English language help continues to increase from year to year, thus increasing the need for more qualified staff having specialized techniques and credentials," according to Cheryl Kreger, director of special services for Dearborn Public Schools. "Enough teachers with this specialized training simply are not available."
