Microbial Ecology Objective 6: Define how ecophysiological processes structure microbial communities, influence their adaptation and evolution, and affect their detection on other planets. We must expand studies of microbial ecosystems because the diversification, evolution, and survival of the early biosphere depended upon the efficient coordination of resources and processes by diverse microbial populations. Interdisciplinary studies of microbial communities are required to identify the genetic and environmental factors that influenced the spread of biological diversity and its impact on biospheric change. For example, we must define and quantify the relationship between environmental heterogeneity and microbial diversity and its bearing on evolution. We must understand how organisms affect each other, and how ecosystems modulate the environment through the processes of chemistry and the changing composition of the oceans and atmosphere due to natural geophysical processes and biology.

Microbial Planet
Microorganisms have established our biosphere and have since maintained the living habitat of planet Earth. More than half of the 3.8 x 109 years on planet Earth, life has been exclusively inhabited by prokaryotes and even today they are by far the dominant forms of life. The use of new experimental tools in the studies of natural microbial communities have clearly demonstrated the central roles played by microorganisms. Microbial life forms are found deep in subsurface strata as well as high up in the atmosphere and possibly way beyond on other planets. Even well-studied biotopes have recently revealed the existence of noval modes of life. ISME-10 in Cancun will be a great opportunity to meet old and new friends and share the excitement of discovering new frontiers in microbial ecology. We look forward to welcoming you to the beautiful Carribbean setting of Cancun, where we will host ISME-10, in August 2004.

Molecular microbial ecology: a new approach to understand the soil ecosystem.
Contributions of biotechnology towards the development of improved microbial inoculants.
Effective wild-type strains can be isolated from the environment to be used as microbial inoculants in agriculture. A further improvement in the characteristics of these microbial strains may be achieved using recombinant DNA technology (i.e. genetic engineering) and innovative biotechnology is being applied to generate genetically-modified strains with improved characteristics for use as microbial inoculants. In practice, cellular traits that have been modified genetically include production of various enzymes and antibiotics. Microbial characteristics that are being targetted for improved inoculant performance include the ability of the inoculated strain to survive in the environment, to compete for nodulation of legume roots (in the case of symbiotic nitrogen-fixing Rhizobium bacteria) and to interact with both beneficial microorganisms (e.g. compatibility with mycorrhizal fungi) and detrimental microorganisms (e.g. inhibition of plant pathogens) in the rhizosphere.

    A diverse group of microorganisms, from unicellular algae to bacteria and viruses, play integral roles in the cycling of nutrients and other compounds in the ocean. Current methods for identifying microbial species and linking them to specific biogeochemical processes are time consuming and often problematic, hindering scientific pursuits to understand the role microbes play in the environment. For the rapid identification of certain toxic algae , MBARI researchers have devised molecular probes which are being evaluated in many locations around the world. These probes continue to undergo refinements to improve their reliability and make them easier to use. At the same time, the microbial researchers are expanding investigations into the far broader realm of non-toxic species to determine whether a similar genetic-based strategy is viable for pinning down the identity of these other, more prevalent microorganisms. This work could potentially contribute to a much more detailed understanding of marine ecosytems and their biodiversity, as well as improve our understanding of the evolution of marine microorganisms. Over the long term, the goal is to integrate ecological studies of marine microbes with the more broad-scale chemical, biological, and physical oceanographic research of

    M ICROBIAL E COLOGY
      Microbial ecology is a new theme for the CPB as part of our third (current) five-year programme. Microbial ecology means different things to different research traditions and what we hope to do might be called microbial population biology: the application of population ecology and population genetics to problems involving micro-organisms. The web pages devoted to this topic will increase as the different projects get going and on this page we summarise the main activities that have started, or will do so in the near future. (ME1) Population and genetic structure of bacteria/plasmid systems We have established a collaboration with Professor Mark Bailey's group at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, Oxford (the institute formally know as IVEM) who have for many years studied the biology of plant-associated Pseudomonas bacteria. Our main links are with Mark, Dr Andy Lilley and Dr Ian Thompson. We have recently completed a DETR-funded project that involved releasing manipulated Pseudomonas in the Ecotron facility. The aim of the last experiment was to compare gene flow when a neutral marker was placed in different locations in a bacterial genome (chromosome, plasmid, chromosome in the presence of a phage). The results of this experiment are currently submitted for publication.

    SREL studies can be placed under three general headings: ecology of trichloroethylene (TCE)-degrading bacteria, ecology of bacteria associated with coal pile run-off, and use of bacteria as indicators of industrial pollution and cleanup.     • highest levels of antibiotic resistance were found in bacteria in a tributary stream that drains Central Shops and C-Reactor, there may be significant industrial contamination in this tributary but not in the main stream channel, and it appears that antibiotic resistance may be a good indicator of level of contamination and thus need for cleanup.
    Sampling sites on tributaries of Four Mile Creek that drain C-Area and Central Shops (N-Area) on the SRS. At each location, levels of bacterial resistance to two antibiotics are indicated by the colored proportion of the circle; at site B1 all bacteria sampled were resistant to streptomycin.
