Associations Name / Contact Description Southeast Collaboratory for Structural Genomics The Southeast Collaboratory for Structural Genomics (SECSG) is funded by a major research grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institutes of Health as a pilot Center for Structural Genomics. The research focus is to develop and test experimental and computation strategies for carrying out high throughput structural determination of proteins by X-ray crystallography and NMR methods and to apply these strategies to scan the entire genome of an organism at a rapid pace. At UGA, the co-PIs for the SECSG are Drs. B. C. Wang ( Biochemistry ), John Rose ( Biochemistry ), Jim Prestegard ( Biochemistry Chemistry CCRC ), Harry Dailey ( Microbiology Biochemistry ) and Mike Adams. Further, it is often a judgement call (and dependent on environmental factors) whether an association is classified as either symbiotic or pathogenic. For these reasons, I am interested in both biofilm formation and pathogenic microbiology for clues they may provide to understanding marine bacterial/invertebrate interactions. My current research focus is the association of marine a-proteobacteria with the Eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica , and specific goals are to understand: (i) the transition of the bacteria from a free-living state to association with host tissues, (ii) the role of cell-cell signaling (e.g. quorum sensing), (iii) factors controlling the specificity of the associations, and (iv) host defense responses.

Partners in highly intimate (symbiotic) associations represent very strong selective forces on one another, however, the role of naturally occurring symbioses with microbes has received little attention from evolutionary ecologists. Plant pathologists have long recognized the impact of microbes and the environment on economically important crop species. In my research I seek to apply the principles of evolutionary ecology to the study of plant-microbe interactions, including both agriculturally important and naturally occurring associations. As my research program grows I intend to broaden my scope to include projects which address additional interests (choosing the most appropriate plant-microbe system(s) as necessary).
