Questions to Ask Yourself Before Taking Microbiology Online
ARE YOU CERTAIN THAT YOU ARE READY FOR AN ONLINE CLASS?
Online classes may be either more difficult or easier for you depending on your learning styles, personality, motivations and other commitments.
Not every student can effectively take advantage of the freedom and responsibility associated with learning within an online environment. Most of us, including your instructor, would find learning easier in a supportive classroom environment with face-to-face encouragement, instructional feedback, personal interactions, and group motivation. Yet for many, the online option fits well and provides an alternative that, due to other factors, is the best alternative.
Compared to a standard classroom situation in which everyone is in the same room, at the same time, doing the same work; the online classroom has less direct contact and immediate access to your instructor and your fellow students. To achieve success in an online class, you must be significantly more self-motivated, assertive, and skilled in your ability to find your own answers and to study on your own. To a large extent, you must be able to generate your own enthusiasm and excitement about learning the material made available, especially when people around you (at home or elsewhere) are all doing something else.

Microbiology is a three-credit semester course that can be used to partially complete the general education requirements for Baccalaureate degrees at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.
Selected Web pages will be used as reading assignments for the course and laboratory handouts will be provided. All students will purchase Microbiology Perspectives (Prentice Hall - 1999). This course will discuss microbe morphology (structure), growth requirements, transmission of microbes, and control of microbes. Basic lab techniques related to asepsis, culturing and identification of microbes, economically important microbes, body defenses, diseases, and food/water/agricultural microbiology will be emphasized.

Welcome To The World Of Microbial Genetics!
Morphology, metabolism, antibiotic resistance, and virtually all other microbial characteristics are determined by inherited information. This information is stored in macromolecules called nucleic acids that are passed on from generation to generation. In this module you will explore the microbial genome in detail by examining how it directs protein synthesis, how it is affected by mutation, and how it is transferred from one microbe to another. You will also explore mechanisms of genome regulation and take a very special look at viral genetics.
