Prerequisites: BIOL 121, 122, 211, 213; CHEM 121 and 122 Microbiology encompasses a wide range of topics including cell chemistry,cell biology, genetics, diversity, ecology, virology, immunology, and pathogenesis. As this class is only one semester, it will be virtually impossible to survey all these topics or cover them in detail. Students should also have a general comprehension of cell chemistry and cell biology from BIOL 211 and 213. The goals of this course then, are to provide a basic understanding of microorganisms (primarily prokaryotes, but including viruses and eukaryotic microorganisms) and how they differ from multicellular eukaryotic organisms, to foster an appreciation of their great metabolic versatility and species diversity, and an introduction to the role of microorganisms in nature (i.e., microbial ecology) and in humans (i.e., biotechnology, immunology, and pathogenesis). Microbial genetics and molecular biology have rapidly become cornerstones in most areas of microbiology and frequently constitute the basis for biotechnology. During the course of rapid advancements in microbiology this century, our appreciation for the significant role played by microorganisms in various ecosystems has increased dramatically. An understanding for the various roles of microbes in marine ecosystems began some 50 years ago and the foundation of the discipline marine microbiology was thereby established. M W ithin the marine oriented projects at the Department of General and Marine Microbiology, emphasis has been given to research related to microbes and surfaces in marine waters; the adaptation of the organisms to stress conditions, particularly energy and nutrient deprivation and salt stress; and the microbial transformations of nitrogen that complete the nitrogen cycle in water and sediment. Microorganisms and surfaces A A S urfaces play a key role as catalysts for a series of microbial activities of importance for ecology and evolution. A significant part of the microbially mediated cycling of carbon appears to take place at surfaces. Particulate organic matter is degraded by attached bacteria thus generating low molecular weight soluble substrates for free-living bacteria. The secondary production of carbon via heterotrophic microorganisms may constitute as much as 40 % of the primary production (i.e. by phytoplankton). Such aggregates and microzones of particulate matter display a higher microbial activity and species diversity. Transfer of genes in dense surface bound populations is one example of microbial activities at surfaces, distinct from those of free-living cells. Studies of these phenomena constitute a part of the microbial adhesion theme that is established at the department.
