Kerala - Yet Another India By Kathy Hochstetler January, 2001 Even on the trip from the airport into coastal city Cochin, Kerala looked and felt different. The many palm trees and the humid heat told us we were in the tropics - quite a change from the drier and colder north. We also noticed a general air of prosperity and growth, with new houses going up everywhere. Signs were in English and Malayalam, the local language, which has a rounded script. The streets were full of people, including many women, who were much rarer on the streets of Delhi and Varanasi. The men wore skirts, called dhotis. slam came to Kerala through the ancient sea routes for trade to Arabia and the Gulf. Christianity also came through the same routes: long before the British and the West arrived, the Apostle Thomas brought Syrian Christianity in the first century from the Middle East. Trade with the Middle East is still important for Kerala, but in 2001, one of Kerala's main exports is people, not spices. Large numbers of Kerala's well-educated population work in the Gulf area. The money that they send back is largely responsible for the new building and economic growth in the area. Kerala's religious diversity also shows up in its politics. The BJP, or Hindu Nationalist Party, is quite weak in Kerala.

IMCA is the international trade association representing offshore, marine and underwater engineering companies. It was formed in 1995 from the amalgamation of AODC (The International Association of Offshore Diving Contractors) founded in 1972 and DPVOA (The Dynamic Positioning Vessel Owners Association) founded in 1990. IMCA members around the world include contractors engaged in pipelay, cable-lay, heavy lift, offshore diving, underwater engineering, ROV, offshore survey, inspection, maintenance and repair. Hugh Williams has wide experience of construction and marine operations.
