The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations
The work of the department is concerned with the ancient civilizations of the Near East, Near Eastern Judaica, and the Islamic civilizations of the Middle East, including Egypt and North Africa, in addition to the history, languages, and literatures of the modern Middle East. The department has two main sections: the Ancient Near East section, and the Islamic, Medieval, and Modern section. Each section is made up of fields of specialization. The fields of the Ancient Near East section are: Assyriology, Egyptology, Hittitology, Northwest Semitic Philology and Near Eastern Judaica, Sumerology, Ancient Near Eastern archaeology, and Near Eastern history. The fields of the Islamic, Medieval, and Modern section are: Arabic language and literature, Persian language and literature, Turkish and Central Asian languages and literatures, Islamic and modern Middle Eastern history, Islamic thought, Islamic archaeology, Medieval Judaica, and modern Hebrew language and literature. The department also offers courses in Armenian studies in collaboration with other departments at the University. The department envisages a twofold purpose: to supply specialists in its fields with basic training, and to offer students in other fields the opportunity of integrating with their own studies the materials with which the department deals. General courses are offered for students not conversant with a Near Eastern language. These courses, besides serving the needs of students working in other departments, are designed to supply students in the department with part of the wider background which they require outside their own field of specialization. The department also publishes the Journal of Near Eastern Studies, which is one of the leading journals in Ancient Near Eastern and Islamic studies.

While best known for its pyramids and ancient civilizations, Egypt has played a central role in the political situation within the region in modern times.
Its three wars with Israel in 1948, 1967 and 1973, then its eventual peace with its adversary in 1979, have seen Egypt move from being a warring nation to become a key representative in the peace process. OVERVIEW
    FACTS
LEADERS MEDIA But the historic step taken by President Anwar Sadat in the Camp David agreement with Israel saw the expulsion of Egypt from the Arab League until 1989, and in 1981 Sadat was assassinated by Islamic extremists angry at his moves to clamp down on their activities. Since then President Hosni Mubarak has taken a more moderate line, but Islamic groups have continued their campaigns sporadically, being responsible for several large-scale killings of tourists. Egypt's ancient past and the fact that it was one of the first Middle Eastern countries to open up to the West following Napoleon's invasion means that it is seen by many as the intellectual and cultural leader in the region. The head of Cairo's Al-Azhar Mosque is one of the highest authorities in Sunni Islam.

BIBLICAL HISTORY OF THE ANCIENT MIDDLE EAST
    2000 B.C.- 100 A.D.

-one year- Biblical History of the Ancient Middle East, 2000 B.C.-100 A.D ., an elective, is a two-semester course for ninth through twelfth grade students. This course is designed to investigate the history, culture, geography, economics, and political systems of the ancient Middle East. The course requires reading, writing, analyzing and evaluating. Students should participate in oral presentations, cooperative learning activities and research projects related to the content. Skill development will include, but is not limited to, the interpretation and application of maps, graphs, charts, political cartoons, primary documents, and other social studies tools. The avenues for these concepts are developed through the social studies strands. The social studies curriculum is designed to be taught in a developmental sequence. This means that the instruction proceeds from the simple to the complex, beginning with the child’s immediate geographic world and expanding to the world, using history, civics, and economics to develop the child’s knowledge and perspectives. The expanding theme that is incorporated in this framework refers to a curriculum progression in the study of people from self, families, communities, cities, regions, United States to the world.

Maybe your friend doesn't know t hat Denmark doesn't border Switzerland. The Europe/Middle East edition includes all of the Balkan nations, and many of the nations in the headlines in 2001 like Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. This is an excellent way to quickly master geographic facts - and an aid to understanding the geographic roots of the rivalries between certain nations. 51 country cards, 16 wild cards, 7 water cards, 1 rules card.
