Introduction
Ancient times
Introduction The struggle between the Israelis and the Palestinians is one of the most enduring and explosive of all the world's conflicts. It has its roots in the historic claim to the land which lies between the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan river. For the Palestinians the last 100 years have brought colonisation, expulsion and military occupation, followed by a long and difficult search for self-determination and for coexistence with the nation they hold responsible for their suffering and loss. For the Jewish people of Israel, the return to the land of their forefathers after centuries of persecution around the world has not brought peace or security. They have faced many crises as their neighbours have sought to wipe their country off the map. BBC News Online highlights some of the key dates of recent Middle East history and looks back at the origins and development of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Back to Top News Sources Privacy

In addition, the Aryans in the Middle East, most notably the Hittites, have now been found to have been in that region at least as early as 2200 BC, wherein they are already mentioned in Sumerian literature. In fact they derived their script from that of the third dynasty of Sumeria. Any Aryan invasion into the Middle East has been pushed back some centuries, though the evidence so far is that the people of the mountain regions of the Middle East were Indo-Europeans as far as recorded history can be traced. The Indo-European Kassites of the ancient Middle East worshipped Vedic Gods like Surya and the Maruts, as well as one named Himalaya.

We have examined the Aryan invasion theory and seen how it has continually failed to prove itself. It has tried to readjust itself to new evidence that has gradually undermined it and now leaves nothing left to hold it up. Therefore we must look at the history of India and the world in the light of the collapse of the invasion theory. The acceptance of a Vedic nature to Harappan and pre-Harappan civilization creates a revolution in our view of history, not just of India but of the entire world.
First it equates Indo-European peoples with one of the largest and oldest of ancient civilizations not in Europe or the Middle East but in South Asia. The idea that the Indo-Europeans were originally nomads or primitive in culture and took over civilization from the people of the Middle East is thereby called into question.

This is how Philip Hitti puts human's existence in perspective: "The duration of the historic period of mankind, 5000 years, is but a small fraction of the prehistoric period. If we could compress man's age on earth into one single day of 12 hours, this literary period would begin at about 11:53 PM, the Crusades would have been fought about 1 minute 44 seconds ago, and America discovered about 55 seconds ago. But man's existence is in turn out of all proportion to the history of the earth itself. If the earth's age could be compressed into one single year, the first eight months would be completely devoid of life; mamals would not make their appearance until the second week of December; man would make his debut on December 31 at 11:45 PM, writing would have been invented less than a minute ago, Christ would have been born 22 seconds ago, and America discovered six seconds ago."

Maisels, Charles K. 1993 The Emergence of Civilization: From Hunting and Gathering to Agriculture, Cities, and the State in the Near East. London, Routledge. back to top Textbook Rationale: back to top Class Purpose The goal of this class is to develop an understanding of how and why cultures developed in the ancient Middle East using both archeological and historical sources and theory. The development and temporal sequence of cultures will be surveyed from the terminal Paleolithic to the Byzantine. More important than learning the sequences of cultures and civilizations is understanding the cultural and ecological forces that shaped some of the most important events in human cultural development. Illumination of these processes will be provided by focusing our attention to specific sites and time periods, while only briefly surveying others. Further, we will acquire an understanding of the way people lived and how the culture worked looking at: population settlement; social structure; the world of work including agriculture; animal husbandry; manufacturing; and the economy including government, trade, and prices.

-one year- Biblical History of the Ancient Middle East, 2000 B.C.-100 A.D ., an elective, is a two-semester course for ninth through twelfth grade students. This course is designed to investigate the history, culture, geography, economics, and political systems of the ancient Middle East. The course requires reading, writing, analyzing and evaluating. Students should participate in oral presentations, cooperative learning activities and research projects related to the content. Skill development will include, but is not limited to, the interpretation and application of maps, graphs, charts, political cartoons, primary documents, and other social studies tools. The avenues for these concepts are developed through the social studies strands. The social studies curriculum is designed to be taught in a developmental sequence. This means that the instruction proceeds from the simple to the complex, beginning with the child’s immediate geographic world and expanding to the world, using history, civics, and economics to develop the child’s knowledge and perspectives. The expanding theme that is incorporated in this framework refers to a curriculum progression in the study of people from self, families, communities, cities, regions, United States to the world.

    39. Middle East - The Beginnings Of Modern History And Ancient Myths
From then on my focus for planning and operations was the middle east. Acrossthe years the middle east continued to be an enigma to Americans.
    http://jmtaylor.us/middle_east.htm
Where to now? After the Iranian government agents mobilized fundamentalists, students and others under their sway to storm the U.S. Embassy in 1980 and seize the embassy staff, followed by the disastrous Desert One operation to rescue the hostages, I was one of many military service members assigned to the Rapid Deployment Task Force as it grew to become Central Command, stationed at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. I expected to be assigned to a forward base at Ras Banas, Egypt, where I was looking forward to scuba diving in the Red Sea, but plans were muddled by the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. From then on my focus for planning and operations was the Middle East. I soon began deploying on exercises and operations in the cradle of civilization, that inhospitable swath of earth that begins with Afghanistan and reaches across to Somalia. A second assignment to the 101st Airborne Division followed, then the old military ping-pong back to Central Command, by necessity I again became a student of the Middle East - the geography, people and especially the cultural differences from main-stream Americans. I say "again" because, ironically, as a Second Lieutenant I had taught Middle Eastern culture and geography to my platoon in the early '60's, before the 101st’s area of planning and interest shifted to Vietnam. Across the years the Middle East continued to be an enigma to Americans. We just plain think and reason differently than the people of the Middle East - not that there is universal homogeneity among the peoples of the Middle East or a lot of the world.
