Israel, Palestine and Lebanon - Ancient History
By Donnacha DeLong
The history of the region goes back to the very beginnings of civilisation. The earliest recorded inhabitants of Palestine were the Canaanites, one of the first literary societies. The region was the scene of much inter-tribal warfare over more than a thousand years before the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, much of which is documented in the Old Testament. Different groups, including the Israelites, the Babylonians, the Assyrians and the Phoenicians, controlled most or all of what is now the Near East at different points through history. At the beginning of the modern era, the region, along with most of Europe, the Near East and North Africa, was under Roman rule. Christianity became firmly established in Lebanon by the 4th Century AD, which became a refuge for minority sects fleeing persecution. The Palestine/Israel region remained predominately Jewish. Roman rule became Byzantine rule at the same time, which remained in place for over 300 years, after which the whole region was conquered by the Muslim Arabs. Islamic rule lasted for around 1300 years, apart from limited incursions by the Christian Crusaders, who controlled Jerusalem from 1099 until 1291, before it was conquered by Egyptian Mamelukes. The region was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1516 (Lebanon)/1517 (Palestine/Israel) and Ottoman rule lasted until the decline of the Empire in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. The modern division of the countries began at the end of the First World War.

Rosemary Moore (moorerl) Holland Hall 508 Office hours: MW 1-3, or by appointment. I’m also usually available right after class. I check my email regularly. If you have questions concerning course content or administration, I strongly suggest that you ask me in person rather than by email. It is likely that your question will be asked by other students, and this will give me a chance to broadcast my answer, so to speak, as well as guarantee you a response. Another option is to use the class email address, . I will moderate this list, so to speak. I’ll let students have first shot at answering questions, but I will step in as needed. Feel free to use this list to discuss course issues, arrange study groups, etc. Description: In this survey course we will survey very broadly three major Mediterranean cultures: Mesopotamian (as a cover term for several subgroups such as the Sumerians, Akkadians, and Assyrians), Egyptian, and Greek. All three of these cultures are conventionally identified as the beginnings of civilization. But rather than use this course as an opportunity simply to glorify Western culture, let us instead study these societies to understand what “civilization” consisted of in their own world-views, and how we define the term today. Why did they become so influential in their own periods, and why do we continue to study them today?

68. Middle Eastern Culture
history Of The middle east. The ancient culture of the middle east flourishedwith myths, symbols, and metaphors that we still respond to today.
Middle Eastern Culture
The Middle East is built on a magnificent legacy of civilizations dating back to ancient times. Science, the arts, written language, mathematics, a legal system, and other hallmarks of civilization flourished in ancient Sumer, Persia, Egypt, and other parts of the Middle East, leaving a legacy of influence on the later cultures of Greece and Rome. Today, the Middle East continues to offer the world a rich cultural contribution, as home to three major world religions, a vibrant entertainment industry, a fascinating tradition of folkloric music and dance, and a growing economic power base.

75. Omega Star-Child Seminars
Looks at prophecy on both a mundane and a personal level, with analysis of events in the middle east and the US, and references from the Bible and from ancient Egypt.
Welcome to the website of Omega Star-Child Seminars and to the writings of Julie Redstone. Our purpose is to bring to you a vision of the sacred future of the earth and the sacred future of the individual. This vision links the past and the future. It is built upon the spiritual legacy of ancient Egypt, the Covenant of Sinai, and the new Covenant of Christianity - each of which brought to the world new and increasing levels of awareness concerning God's reality. In the Old Testament prophesies of the Book of Isaiah, in the construction of the Sphinx on the plain of Gizeh, in the Psalms of David, and especially in the image of the Lamb of God, we see the forecast of a future in which mankind will come to know God in a whole new way. This is the future of prophesy and the future of the Covenant: that God shall dwell with men and they shall be unto Him a holy people.
