PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST
Senate Floor Statement by U.S. Senator James M. Inhofe (R-Okla)
March 4, 2002 I was interested the other day when I heard that the de facto ruler, Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Abdullah, made a statement which was received by many in this country as if it were a statement of fact, as if it were something new, a concept for peace in the Middle East that no one had ever heard of before. I was kind of shocked that it was so well received by many people who had been down this road before.
I suggest to you that what Crown Prince Abdullah talked about a few days ago was not new at all. He tallked about the fact that under the Abdullah plan, Arabs would normalize relations with Israel in exchange for the Jewish state surrendering the territory it received after the 1967 Six-Day War as if that were something new. He went on to talk about other land that had been acquired and had been taken by Israel.
I remember so well on December 4 when we covered all of this and the fact that there isn't anyhing new about the prospect of giving up land that is rightfully Israel's land in order to have peace.
When it gets right down to it, the land doesn't make that much difference because Yasser Arafat and others don't recognize Israel's right to any of the land. They do not recognize Israel's right to exist.

from Members of English-Speaking

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell
U.S. State Department 2202 C Street NW Washington DC 20520 Dear Mr. Secretary, "... No one can remain indifferent to the injustice of which the Palestinian people have been victims for more than fifty years. No one can contest the right of the Israeli people to live in security. But neither can anyone forget the innocent victims who on both sides fall day after day under the blows of violence. Weapons and bloody attacks will never be the right means for making a political statement to the other side. Nor is the logic of the law of retaliation capable any longer of leading to paths of peace." John Paul II (January 10, 2002) We, the undersigned, have experienced and can attest to the truth of these words of Pope John Paul II. We are members of several English-speaking Christian communities in the Holy Land who have been living in Israel and in the Occupied Territories. Our length of residence ranges from six months to twenty years. We represent a number of English-speaking nationalities, predominantly American but also many others, and a wide variety of backgrounds and professions. We include students and professors, parents and clergy, US government/ USAID personnel, heads/personnel of American and other non-governmental aid agencies, international diplomats, officials working for UN agencies and health and education professionals.

Dear Unknown Friends: The tremendous lesson that arises from the anguish and brutality now going on in the land of Israel/Palestine, is that humanity, all of us, must learn from Aesthetic Realism what contempt is. We must learn how contempt works in our own selves and how to criticize it. There is certainly brutality coming from both sides in the conflict. Yet the happenings in that land near the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea should make for these big questions: How could people whose relatives were tormented by the Nazis, were imprisoned in concentration camps, humiliated, worked to death, murdered in gas chambers — how could Jews now destroy the homes of Palestinians, shut off their water supply, kill women and children and keep ambulances from reaching them so that they bleed to death? I present these questions as a person who is Jewish, who cares very much for the state of Israel and wants her to flourish — to flourish authentically. Another question, which cries out to be asked by all humanity, is: If Jews, who have been so victimized, so brutalized, can become brutes themselves, who is not capable of large cruelty? Everyone is.

CHRONICLING THE SMASHING SUCCESS OF THE MIDDLE EAST REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS (MERIA) Just one year ago, no one had ever heard of an academic journal on the Internet, certainly not in Mideast affairs. But Prof. Barry Rubin, senior resident scholar at the BESA Center saw the potential. Using e-mail and the Internet, he argued, scholars could instantaneously share analysis, search for research partners, poll colleagues for ideas and source material, and share accounts and announcements of books, conferences, research projects and grant opportunities. "This will be big," he tried to convince skeptical colleagues at the Center. "And it's almost cost-free," he added. "On the Internet, we incur no international mailintg costs, have total flexibility on length and variety of published material, will be able to prepare a journal issue for publication with no printing house delays and the journal's contents will be constantly available through the BESA Center homepage," he maintained. The First Mideast Journal on the Internet Well, Rubin was right, and the

Greece assures its support for stability in the Middle East
Regional Greece, Politics, 12/4/1999 Greece expressed its encouragement for security and stability in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean Sea as well as the Balkans, saying that it adopts a wide policy aimed at helping it overcome the crises in these areas and establish peace, stability and cooperation among the regions' countries.
A statement distributed by the Greek embassy in Cairo yesterday quoted Greek Defense Minister Apostolos-Athanasios Tsohatzopoulos as saying that the countries in these three areas also realize that a joint future includes supporting the concept of regional security through adopting a policy that guarantees peace and stability. Nature in the Middle East Recently returned from a month in the Middle East.... I must admit that my birding left much to be desired simply because I was so busy with other things. (archaeolgy and visiting friends) I didn't even buy a local birdbook $44.95 US. But I did enjoy the CRESTED LARKS who were busy getting ready to raise families around our dig site. They sing from about 100 feet up and were busy defending territory and carrying on their mating display. At least 2 species of colorful KINGFISHERS were active just below the baptismal area of the Jordan River. One species with 4 young was teaching them how to fish in the Jordan River which is full of fish. When we visited Tell Hazor north of the Lake of Galilee I observed at least 2 species of magnificent BEE-EATERS who excavate nesting tunnels similar to Kingfishers. They use the baulk sides from the old excavations. These birds soar on the updrafts and display wonderful colors. They were very active in the midday heat. Buzzards?, a falcon like raptor, were sighted in several areas as well as this spot. I think that I saw MASKED SHRIKES at this place as well (striking black and white birds). I saw at least one EAGLE.

Water is the most precious and valuable natural (and national) resource in the Middle East, vital for socioeconomic growth, sustainability of the environment, and—when considered to the extreme—for survival. This publication presents an overview of Middle East water resources in areas of Israeli, Jordanian, and Palestinian interest. Areal and site-specific hydrologic, meteorologic, and geologic data provided by water-resources agencies of the region are presented to allow a broad depiction of the overall water conditions in the region. This publication was developed as part of the Middle East Water Data Banks Project, which encourages management and protection of water resources on a regional basis. Work was completed as a cooperative effort among the three Core Parties and was coordinated under the umbrella of the Water Working Group of the Middle East Multilateral Peace Process. The participating water-resources institutions are the Palestinian Water Authority, Jordanian Ministry of Water and Irrigation, and Israeli Hydrological Service.
    Population and Water Supply
Water use will continue to increase with population and economic growth.
