The Middle East Conflict
Video Summary: How do you introduce to sixth-graders a topic as complex and controversial as the Middle East? Justin Zimmerman starts by asking guided questions to assess his students' background knowledge of the region, then has them practice their negotiating and conflict resolution skills. (Note: This lesson was taught prior to September 11, 2001.) First, Mr. Zimmerman asks his students to define the region geographically and to identify the major religions of the Middle East: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Then, to engage students and help them understand how complex the problems in the region are, he has them wrestle with two hypothetical situations analogous to those faced by the people living in the Middle East: Students must choose which of three academic subjects is most important to their education, and defend their choice; then they must choose which one of three siblings is entitled to their parents' house.

Carter Criticises Bush
Nobel Peace prize-winner for 2002, ex-US President Jimmy Carter criticised the Middle East policy of George Bush on Monday, accusing the American President of abandoning the peace process by treating Palestinians and Israelis with two weights and two measures.
Carter said that the USA today is wholly committed to israel and does not even speak with the Palestinian leaders and added that he did not consider that George Bush has the conditions to get the peace talks back on schedule.
“You have to have the confidence of both sides, you have to act equally with the two sides and we are not doing this”, stated Carter, who fears that 30 years of commitment to peace in the Middle East was for nothing.

photographs by Dr. Mustamandy and family Courtesy of Huvishka Mustamandy Afghanistan was simultaneously developing an influence from Bactria (Ancient Middle East) and Gandhar. Gandharan, a Graeco-Buddhist style specific to the region between Kabul and Peshawar incorporated Hellenism and traditional Buddhist style from the Far-East. "I was named after a Kushan King," Huvishka says. "My father named me after King Havishnu." The Kushan Empire, a unity of tribes centered in Central Asia, had a history of Kings who were highly interested in the arts. "We used to camp out in the desert, in an area called Tapa-i-Shator, which means 'Hill of the Camel.' That was one of my dad's biggest archaeological sites. We would always be playing at the excavation site, where it was pretty much just sand and these huge trenches."

Archeology
Archeology is the study of the human past. Its initial objective is the construction of cultural chronology. Its intermediate objective is the reconstruction of past lifeways. Its ultimate objective is the discovery of the processes which underlie and condition human behavior. Archeology (and alternately Archaeology) is a science well suited for anyone who enjoys biology, botany, geology, chemistry, history, psychology, art, and solving a great puzzle. It is not looting and robbing. Various countries have enacted laws and regulations to ensure that their legacies are not exported or destroyed. There are acts which intend to repatriate looted legacies. In the United States of America, many state governments are sensitive to the need for archeological study and excavation when any development project state-sponsored or commercial uncovers evidence of historical human presence. It is our hope that the web pages at this site lead you to sites and projects of specific geographic regions and specific disciplines such as underwater and marine archeology. There are pages which can lead you to reference material, academic departments, libraries, museums, publications, organizations, and other endeavors. Archeology grows as a science and continues to add new disciplines to its roster, such as urban archeology and geo-archeology.
