Room number: Telephone (UK): Telephone (International): Email: G.Rowley@Sheffield.ac.uk
A rich and varied career commenced with appointment to a lectureship in Sheffield, subsequently being promoted to Senior Lecturer then Reader. Visiting positions have included periods at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Clark University, Harvard University, the Universities of Toronto, McMaster, Manitoba and Wilfred Laurier. Dr Rowley is also a Peabody Fellow at Harvard. He is currently an external examiner at Universities within the UK, Ireland and the Middle East. City and town centres; Out-of-centre retailing; Middle East; Israeli settlements in the Occupied Territories; Competition over land and water in Palestine; The Islamic World. Inner city research within the UK and North America, retail systems and competitions over land and natural resources within the Middle East, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the broader Islamic cultural realm. Two matters are of particular interest at the present time. In Britain we focus upon the proceeding developments within and about the established Central Business Districts and the potential generative effects of the larger out-of-town retail agglomerations, as at Meadowhall, Sheffield, upon adjacent brownfield sites. Within the Middle East the continuing Israeli irredentist activities about Jerusalem and the Occupied Territories in general provide a specific focus of our proceeding studies.

When entered into BIBSYS, the books will have full Dewey numbers assigned to them by the University Library. For the purposes of shelving, however, we are using a shelf marks system based on the one at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, but modified to the needs of our smaller, and more specialized collection. In this system, the books are shelved primarily according to geography: all books on e.g. Libya or on the Sudan are put together, and then subdivided within each country by subject. Thus each shelf number consists of two parts: a letter code indicating geographical area and (where relevant) a number indicating subject within the area. The inheritance from the SOAS system shows in the letters used, we have e.g. virtually nothing on ` C ' (China), and there is a clear division between the Middle East ( N ) and Africa ( U ). The areas used are: A General books, not related to the Middle East C- J: Asia generally N Islam, the Near and Middle East

IES AND MEWIN
Toward this end, the IES has taken under its aegis the Middle East Water Database, containing some 10,000 catalogued entries. IES has transformed the database into a web-accessible bibliography open to all users anywhere in the world without charge. The current range of sources in the database encompassing such topics as hydrology, geography, science and technology, economics, population, politics, law, management, and strategic affairs will be retained. The database already contains items that go beyond the Middle East and new bibliographical entries pertaining to other regions will continue to be added to broaden the scope of the database. Quick retrieval of bibliographical information is facilitated by the variety of ways entries can be searched. Please see the instructions below.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
  • Searches may be conducted by author, title, subject, country, basin, and keywords (e.g., climate, security, flow, population) Specify the information you would like to search. You can be as specific as you like, but more specificity may mean there will be fewer (or no) matching documents in the database.

Jordan Introduction Top of Page Background: For most of its history since independence from British administration in 1946, Jordan was ruled by King HUSSEIN (1953-1999). A pragmatic ruler, he successfully navigated competing pressures from the major powers (US, USSR, and UK), various Arab states, Israel, and a large internal Palestinian population, through several wars and coup attempts. In 1989 he resumed parliamentary elections and gradually permitted political liberalization; in 1994 a formal peace treaty was signed with Israel. King ABDALLAH II - the eldest son of King HUSSEIN and Princess MUNA - assumed the throne following his father's death in February 1999. Since then, he has consolidated his power and established his domestic priorities. Saudi Arabia Introduction Top of Page Background: In 1902 Abdul al-Aziz Ibn SAUD captured Riyadh and set out on a 30-year campaign to unify the Arabian peninsula. In the 1930s, the discovery of oil transformed the country. Following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990, Saudi Arabia accepted the Kuwaiti royal family and 400,000 refugees while allowing Western and Arab troops to deploy on its soil for the liberation of Kuwait the following year. A burgeoning population, aquifer depletion, and an economy largely dependent on petroleum output and prices are all major governmental concerns.
