Lest We Forget: Military Museums By Joe Volz Heartland Museum of Military Vehicles Literally located in the heartland, this non-profit museum of military vehicles, off Interstate 80 in Lexington, Nebraska, offers a collection of restored jeeps, armored personnel carriers, helicopters and an M-60 tank. Many are movable vehicles that are loaned out to local communities. And many were discovered in neighboring cornfields. Converting war machines to peacetime use became a compulsion for the farming community in Nebraska after World War II. Short of heavy equipment when industries shifted to peacetime manufacturing, farmers used half tracks, for example, as snow plows. The museum founders literally dug up military vehicles in Nebraska fields. Says Terry Lauby, co-founder of the museum, "I have a pilot retrieval vehicle from 1943 that never turned a wheel in war but has been used extensively since-one time during the 1949 blizzard."

Aircraft Museums Chicago Science Museum I didn't even know that the Chicago Science Museum had an aircraft collection until I went there, and it's true that it's not very big. But there are a few interesting aircraft... Including a Spitfire which is an actual veteran of the Battle of Britain... And a German Ju 87 Stuka which was shot down in the desert of Libya in 1941. Duxford Imperial War Museum The Imperial War Museum facility at Duxford airfield near Cambridge doesn't just house military aircraft. As well as having the world's first jet airliner, the Comet, this might also be the only place where you'll get to walk through the world's most sophisticated jet airliner, the Concorde. This is really several museums in one, because there are four separate collections, two housed in large old hangars, one collection of post world war two British aircraft standing outside, and the purpose-built American Air Museum, which has one of the most impressive collections of American military aircraft outside the United States, including a B17 Flying Fortress, B52 Stratofortress, and a U2 spy plane. There are around 180 aircraft in total, including most of the classic aircraft of world war two.

Pearl Harbor military museums
Pearl Harbor on the Hawaiian island of Oahu is, of course, the site of the Japanese surprise attack which brought America into World War Two. Most people also know about the memorial located above the USS Arizona, a battleship sunk during that battle with very high loss of life; however, far fewer are aware of two other historical attractions in the same vicinity, which are also associated with ships which fought the war in the Pacific. The first of these is the USS Missouri, the last battleship the United States ever built, and the platform for the Japanese surrender which brought World War Two to a close. In addition, there is the USS Bowfin, a submarine which forms the nucleus of the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum. All three of these ships are now within easy reach of each other. On December 7, 1941, the USS Arizona was tied alongside a pair of concrete mooring piers near Ford Island in what was known as "battleship row". She was there together with six other battleships, and with a support ship the USS Vestal tied up on the side furtherest from the island. The attack began at 7:55AM, and only 15 minutes later a bomb penetrated the deck of the Arizona and detonated its foward ammunition magazine. The huge explosion and subsequent sinking killed 1177 of her crew, which is over half the American casualties on the day. All eight battleships were sunk or severely damaged, however five of them were later salvaged and returned to service. The Arizona was left where it sank, together with almost all the bodies of the men who died on her. The current memorial which straddles the ship was opened in 1962. It can be visited without charge and is very popular, attracting large crowds, about twenty percent of whom are Japanese. The

Balkan Military Museums
Muzeul Militar National - Bucharest
Romania's National Military Museum is based in an army barracks at Str. Mircea Vulcanescu in Bucharest. By any standards this is an impressive collection covering the army, air force and naval history of Romania in an area of 22,150 sq.m. The main building provides a chronological tour of Romanian military history. The displays are of a high standard with excellent fortification models and clear maps covering the main campaigns. The uniform displays and dioramas fill many of the gaps in English language publications. A lack of captions in English is not a major problem, although a dictionary is a useful aide! The grounds hold a huge collection of artillery covering just about every heavy weapon used in the Balkans during the 20th Century, including rail guns and tanks. A separate hanger holds a collection of aircraft from early experimental flying machines, the F-10G biplane through to the WW2 IAR 80 and IAR 93 jet. Unlike many East European museums the collections are well structured with helpful staff. There is a modest range of publications for sale including an English language video all at (for the Western tourist) bargain prices. Highly recommended. Whilst in Bucharest the National History Museum has plaster casts from Trajan's Column together with an extensive collection of arms and armour of the same period. However, in contrast to the Military Museum the staff are surly and unhelpful with not even an adequate floor plan to guide the visitor.

Pearl Harbor
Naturally, the US is full of naval museums. The USS Missouri is the latest addition to Pearl.
Pearl Harbour is now packed with three museum ships: USS Arizona, USS Bowfin, and the latest addition, USS Missouri. It seems that the story came to a full circle. The Pacific War started with the sinking of the Arizona and other major warships by the Japanese; US submarines henceforth were used to demolish the Japanese merchant marine, and then, the formal surrender was signed on board the Missouri.

London
HMS Belfast was the flagship of the Allied fleet at the time of the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944. A typical British 8-inch gun heavy cruiser, the Belfast was not modern enough to be an effective weapon of naval warfare by 1945. Nonetheless, the British cruiser fleet was the substance of British imperial power, protecting its vital sealane communication. Hard pressed by enemy air forces, they gallantry fought to keep the Axis powers at bay. They often paid high prices, but ultimately, they were the masters of the seas.

Travel story on Military Museums of London
By Alan L. Bailey The exploding bombs sounded distant as George, an air raid warden by night and grocer by day, warned us the attack was one he never forgot. When the anti-aircraft guns fired the flak, someone said it was good to be giving them something back. As the blasts drew nearer, the crowd in the underground shelter began singing, "Roll out the barrel." The bombs' piercing whistles became louder. Suddenly, a woman screamed, "Stop it," and an explosion rocked the shelter, shaking our bench, almost a direct hit. After the sirens, our warden opened the entrance as smoke drifted in, and with his flashlight, he motioned us out. We saw the flickering lights from the fires throughout London. In the distance stood the untouched dome of St. Paul's Cathedral. Through the rubble, the guide returned us to the basement of the Imperial War Museum. My group of 20 visitors had just experienced the Blitz in a re-creation of the sights, sounds and smells of a packed underground shelter in London during the fierce German bombings of 1940-41. It's part of the theatrics that has made the Imperial War Museum and London's other national military museums a favorite stop during the 50-year anniversary celebrations of World War II that continue through 1995. In November of 1992, I was in London for eight days and visited several government museums.
