Royal Military Police Instant Information Extends the Long Arm of the Law. The Royal Military Police (RMP) are charged with the task of enforcing law and order not just in the United Kingdom but in all countries where British Service personnel are stationed. Active service men and women and others attached to the military are subject to the laws of the united Kingdom, to Service law and to the law of the country in which they serve. Changes to these laws must be communicated to RMP personnel swiftly and accurately. There are four important functional areas:-
  • Operational support to the field Army The prevention of crime Law enforcement and assistance with the maintenance of discipline Assistance, advice and information services to the community at large, not just the military
Access to up-to-date information Working in environments that are distinguished by their speed of change, whether it is motivated by legislation or political requirement, the RMP must be confident that its work force act upon the very latest information. The resolution of this problem must also take account of the fact that some personnel may not be at the end of a standard telephone line. Lt. Colonel Pemberton, who is the Provost Marshal Army Staff Officer responsible for development and doctrine says "In order to disseminate information throughout the military community we needed to be able to communicate must faster today than our traditional methods allowed.

TRAIL OF TERROR
U.S. to review ban on military in police role.
July 22, 2002 By Scott Lindlaw
2002 Chicago Sun TImes WASHINGTONHomeland security chief Tom Ridge says the threat of terrorism may force government planners to consider using the military for domestic law enforcement, now largely prohibited by federal law. President Bush has called on Congress to review the law that bans the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines from participating in arrests, searches, seizure of evidence and other police-type activity on U.S. soil. The Coast Guard and National Guard troops under the control of state governors are excluded from the Reconstruction-era law, known as the Posse Comitatus Act. Ridge said Sunday that it ''goes against our instincts as a country to empower the military with the ability to arrest,'' and he called the prospect ''very unlikely.'' But he said the government is wise to examine the law. "We need to be talking about military assets, in anticipation of a crisis event,'' Ridge said on ''Fox News Sunday.'' ''And clearly, if you're talking about using the military, then you should have a discussion about posse comitatus.'' Two influential Democratic senators agreed with Bush and Ridge that the law ought to be reviewed but expressed no interest in granting the military new powers to arrest American citizens.

Operation Urgent Fury and Operation Just Cause
Operation Urgent Fury - Grenada - 1983

In 1983 President Reagan ordered U.S. Marines, Army Rangers, Navy Special Warfare teams, and other military forces to invade Grenada, citing a takeover of the tiny Caribbean Island by "a brutal group of leftist thugs."
U.S. troops, along with a small force from six Caribbean nations, overcame surprisingly strong resistance from Cubans, who supported the island's new regime. More than 200 Army women participated in the invasion...but they were not considered as having been in combat. Coast Guard women served aboard ships patrolling the waters around Grenada; and Air Force women flew as pilots, engineers and loadmasters. An Air Force pilot, and future astronaut, Lt Col Eileen Collins, flew the evacuated medical students and their familes out of Grenada while another pilot, Lt Celeste Hayes flew 82nd Airborne troops to Salinas airfield...but they were "not considered as having been in combat."
Operation Just Cause - Panama - 1989
Just Cause consisted of the deployment of numerous US forces from all service branches. These also included US Army Rangers, Special Forces, Navy SEALs, and various Air Force personnel and aircraft. One of the less-publicized elements of the invasion force was the US Army's 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment Delta, whose primary mission involved efforts to locate and secure Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, targeted for arrest by U.S. federal law enforcement agents.

We are delighted to add COMBAT POLICE to our collection of books. Your ten years of research and production of this book (which) analyze the operations of the U.S. Army military police during the (Vietnam) War will prove an asset to researchers Texas Tech University, Archives of the Vietnam Conflict Letter: June 1997
Without question, COMBAT POLICE is a welcome addition . . . and certainly will enhance the military history community, especially those interested in the service of the Military Police during the Vietnam conflict U.S. Army Military History Institute, Carlisle Barracks Book Review: October 1997
COMBAT POLICE, using historical and technical detail, composes a brand new picture of the painful and valorous contributions MPs made to a war in which they served in a remarkably different way. Filled with organizational charts and tables, (the book) is above all a persistent effort to fix and preserve historically what really happened to military police officers in (Vietnam) Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association Book Review: October/November 1997
COMBAT POLICE fills a gaping void (providing) the first look at an important part of the Vietnam War that has been all but ignored in literature. (Rick) Young, an MP in Vietnam in 1968-69, does a masterful job covering every aspect of the Army MPs during the war Vietnam Veterans of America
