Bon voyage, Mr. Mayor
It's a trip he's taken a fair amount of political heat for - including from Democratic mayoral hopeful Brian Stratton - but one that seems entirely justified. In fact, as even a casual reader of the Gazette's recently completed series on the Guyanese migration to Schenectady might agree, it's a trip Jurczynski has earned . And he's not using public funds to pay for it. The Guyanese migration to Schenectady, which Jurczynski may not have started but which he clearly worked hard to encourage, has breathed some real life into the city's long-feeble real estate market. The table on housing sales at the end of Tuesday's installment told it all: Sales of both single- and two-family houses jumped dramatically in the city over the past three years, as did median sale prices. And the number of days it took to sell a house on the market dropped precipitously. Unquestionably, falling mortgage rates and a national housing boom get some of the credit for Schenectady's revival, but without the Guyanese, it's hard to imagine who would have been buying and fixing up all of the city's lower-end houses. That seems to be their specialty, and it is not only helping turn around a couple of borderline neighborhoods (where housing values have more than doubled), but boosting the city's tax base. That means helping to keep taxes down.

Posted June 12, 2002 MILITARY SCHOOLS By Lon Woodbury, C.E.P. When parents call our office, one of the most common requests is for a “Military School,” or sometimes for a “Boot Camp.” The idea that a military experience is a solution for acting-out, rebellious and out-of-control young people is a deeply held belief among many American citizens. But as a way of dealing with out-of-control young people in early 21st century American society, this idea has basically become a myth! Both the military and military schools are no longer what they used to be. They still can offer a discipline and guidance for the young person who simply is floundering and needs some direction. The military and its schools fail, however, to provide effective help for those out-of-control young people who stubbornly insist on doing what they want, when they want, however they want. What military service for young men used to be, both in this country and in most societies throughout history, was a societal safety valve, used to introduce adolescent males to concepts of responsibility, cooperation and self-discipline. Military service was used not only for a nation’s defensive and military purposes, but also as a tool to take floundering boys and turn them into men by teaching them discipline and how to work cooperatively and constructively with others. It has often been a means by which society has “socialized” those boys who otherwise would focus their intense but undisciplined energy into anti-social or self-centered activities. For example, in our early history, there are numerous reports of

The DCMD is directly responsible to the Director-General for Political and Security affairs who is also Deputy Secret ary General of the foreign ministry. The team is led by a general officer and is made up of diplomats and members of the armed forces. The integration of the DCMD into the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs reflects a concern for coherence in the implementation of cooperation policies.

http://www.bootcampsforteens.com/boot.html
Boot Camps
There are several types of teenage boot camps. There are short term and long term boot camps, there are state funded jail boot camps, prison boot camps, and privately owned boot camps. There are boot camps that will take teens who don't want to be there and boot camps that will only take willing participants. There are even weekend long boot camps. We believe that most teens will generally do better in a long term setting. If the teen is young and just beginning down a negative path sometimes a weekend wake-up call will help. The majority of the calls we take however, will need a longer stay, usually about 1 year. In most cases parent's have tried everything before they decide to seek outside help.
Military Schools, or Military Boarding Schools
Traditional Military Schools are usually not the appropriate placement for a defiant, unruly, out of control teen. Most of them will require an interview with the potential student and his or her family. In a recent survey 99% of the military schools we contacted were not interested in accepting a defiant, unwilling teen. The most difficult fact for most parents to deal with is the discharge policy. If a cadet or military school student is asked to leave, the parents lose their tuition. When you consider the fact that the reason the teen is being placed there to begin with is because he is defiant, the choice seems to be quite inappropriate. This coupled with the fact that tuition for the semester is paid in advance, the loss can be quite devastating.
