GUIDE TO COMMON CONSTITUENTS OF FRAGMENTAL SEDIMENTARY ROCKS This page is also available as a printed handout.
SILICA MINERALS
undulose extinction
Quartz, SiO
Hexagonal, colourless, cleavage generally absent, 1st order birefringence up to pale yellow, low relief, length slow, uniaxial positive. Extinction often undulose or shows 'strain shadows'. Often, quartz grains occur which show uneven or undulose extinction: the crystal does not all go into extinction in one position. This is an effect of distortion of the crystal lattice during tectonic deformation. Normally, this straining occurs prior to incorporation of the grain in the sediment. Stresses in sedimentary sequences are usually insufficient to produce this degree of deformation. Strained quartz may show biaxial figure with low 2V. Inclusions common: e.g. vacuoles, 'negative crystals', tourmaline, mica, hair-like rutile etc. Grains which contain two or more crystals are known as polycrystalline quartz. Very common. Syntaxial secondary overgrowths picked out by 'dust pellicles' are common. A number of quartz types may be recognised:
plutonic or common quartz
Most abundant type derived from granites and granite-gneisses. May be monocrystalline or polycrystalline. Polycrystalline grains tend to be larger. Undulose extinction common. Inclusions generally uncommon.

Geology of the Tomaree Peninsula, Port Stephens, New South Wales, Australia. This information was extracted from my book " Bush Mates , a guide to the wildlife of Nelson Bay". If you would like the latest copy of BUSH MATES , E-MAIL The Port Stephens Visitors Centre (tops@hunterlink.net.au) with your request and they will issue you with instructions on how to get a copy. The book will cost about $18, plus postage. The Port Stephens Visitors Centre can be phoned on 1800808900. In past times this area was a plain which was uplifted 300 metres at the end of the Tertiary period, 10 million years ago. The resulting plateau has been eroded down to it's present level, with the exception of the many hills such as Gan Gan, Glovers Hill etc. remaining at the original level. Port Stephens became an estuary during the Late Pleistocene (70,000 years ago) when the sea level rose about 60 metres. The higher points remained as islands. Since then an emergence of 5 metres has taken place raising some land above the current sea level, about 6000 years ago. Port Stephens is a drowned valley. Before submergence a ridge at Soldiers Point to Middle Island and beyond divided the watershed of the Karuah and Myall Rivers. Before submergence the Karuah River flowed south to join up with the Hunter River system. At that time the Myall River alone flowed into what we now call Port Stephens.

You are here: HOMEPAGE Adventures Spruce Imagine a place where the ground sparkles with crystals of quartz and pyrite. And the land owners are friendly, so you can pick up all you want. Our Spruce claim is a crystal collector's paradise. You can climb into a crystal cavern or learn the techniques to collect those fabulous minerals seen in museums. We provide tools and instructions to help you extract beautiful pyrite and quartz crystals, including doubly terminated, scepters, and phantoms. Access to Spruce requires a strenuous hike: 1,000 feet elevation gain in one-half mile. That's about the energy equivalent of taking the stairs to the 30th floor of an office building. Our "office" is at 3,000 feet in a beautiful mountain valley. You'll hike through an old growth forest, with many stops to admire the view (and catch your breath!). If you are overweight, short of breath, acrophobic, or have knee or back problems, choose another trip. If you have any doubt of your ability to hike to Spruce, go to a high rise building and stairclimb to the 30th floor in 40 minutes. This is how you will feel when you reach the collecting area at Spruce. You´ll need to have enough energy left to swing a hammer! We hike in and out as a group, so the slowest person determines group speed.

Minerals from Kidney Stones
Rockhounds are often told that they have rocks in their head. It turns out that the human body does make lots of minerals. Bones and teeth are two obvious examples. We may argue that these aren't minerals by strict definition, because they are made by living organisms not inorganically, but they are otherwise the same as minerals found in rocks. When I was a graduate student at Indiana University, my office mates were helping with a research project on minerals in kidney stones (which are concretions technically called urinary calculi). They received daily packages of rather disgusting samples from many hospitals which they saw fit to open and analyze in my prescence. One of my old office mates, Dick Gibson, wrote up a summary of the minerals they found. The most common minerals were, not surprisingly, phosphates. These include apatite, brushite and whitlockite. Apatite is the most common mineral in many kidney stones, forming crumbly to solid white, yellow or brownish masses. Various forms of apatite were interlayered, like the layers in hailstones. Brushite occurs as tabular to bladed yellow to white crystals typical of kidney stones formed under more acidic conditions. Whitlockite forms amber to brown coatings on some stones, and is particularly common in prostatic stones. Two calcium oxalates, whewellite and weddellite are abundant in kidney stones. Outside the body, these minerals are rare, found most often on the deep sea floor, in coal seams and in sedimentary nodules. In kidney stones the whewillite forms globular to radiating masses of crystals while weddellite forms sharp dipyramidal crystals up to 5 mm long (ouch).

    Metamorphic Rocks
    Pamela J. W. Gore
    Georgia Perimeter Collegee
    Objectives
  • List the agents of metamorphism and briefly describe the effects of each agent.
  • Briefly describe the textural differences exhibited by metamorphic rocks (foliated, non-foliated).
  • Describe the use of index minerals in the interpretation of metamorphic zones.
  • Discuss the types of metamorphism.
  • Discuss the relationship between metamorphism and plate tectonics. Metamorphism means "changed form".
    Agents of Metamorphism
    Changes occur because of:
    • Heat
    • Pressure
    • Chemical fluids
Rocks adjust to become more stable under new, higher temperatures and pressures.
  • Heat
  • There are several sources of heat for metamorphism.
  • Geothermal gradient
Temperature increases with depth at a rate of 20 - 30 degrees C per km in the crust.
Ultimate source of the heat? Radioactive decay. Increase of temperature and pressure with depth causes Regional Metamorphism
Heat may come from large bodies of molten rock rising under a wide geographic area.
  • Intrusions of hot magma can bake rocks as it intrudes them. Lava flows can also bake rocks on the ground surface.
