The Roots of Youth Violence
On January 17, 1977, the state of Utah executed Gary Gilmore by firing squad for the murder of two men. The execution was notable because Gilmore’s was the first U.S. execution in 10 years and because Gilmore had steadfastly refused attempts to appeal his death penalty, insisting that he wanted to be punished for the crimes he had committed. The execution became more notable with the publication in 1979 of "The Executioner’s Song," a fictionalized depiction of Gilmore’s life by Norman Mailer. The book won the Pulitzer Prize for Mailer, resurrected Gilmore’s remarkable story posthumously, and eventually was made into a TV movie. Another postmortem account appeared in 1994 when Mikal Gilmore, Gary’s brother, published "Shot in the Heart," a memoir of growing up in the Gilmore household—a caldron of dysfunction and violence. Gary Gilmore’s childhood and his path to death row teach lessons about the roots of youth violence, the theme of this month’s Minnesota Medicine The Gilmore family was a genealogical study in domestic disruption. Gary Gilmore’s father, Frank, was the product of Fay, who conjured spirits under the name Baby Fay LaFoe, and "probably," Harry, who left the family when Frank was 3. (Family legend held that escape artist Harry Houdini was Frank’s father.) Frank’s mother found her own escape, farming her son off to multiple boarding schools. Following this gypsy childhood, Frank’s adult life was a series of drunken brawls and multiple official and unofficial marriages mixed with recurrent brutality toward wives, girlfriends, and children.

The secret is in knowing where to look, and once you start finding information, resources, and schools, the challenge is deciding what type of school is appropriate for your child" (NAD website, 2001). School choices include mainstreaming programs, day classes within regular schools, state residential schools for the deaf, and private residential schools. These are very briefly described below, as taken from Paul Ogden's book, The Silent Garden Mainstreaming is the process of sending children with special needs into regular classes - as opposed to special classes or special schools. For deaf and hard of hearing children, this means attending classes with their hearing peers.

Canku Ota (Many Paths) An Online Newsletter Celebrating Native America August 10, 2002 - Issue 67 Native's Making the Grade Wisconsin's first public school was opened in 1828 by a Stockbridge-Munsee Indian named Electa Quinney, who brought the New England concept of a free school with her when the government moved her Mohican tribe from New York to Wisconsin. Quinney taught in a one-room school in Kaukauna where Indian and white students, most of them poor, could learn together. It was a strong start, but two centuries later, Wisconsin's 12,311 American Indian students lag behind their white classmates by nearly every measure: Just 73 percent of Indian ninth-graders graduate four years later, compared with 94 percent of white students. More than 16 percent of Indian high school students will be held back a grade, compared with less than 5 percent of white students. The cumulative grade point average of Indian students in the Madison schools is 1.92, about a C-, compared to 2.88 or about a B-, for white students.

PREFACE The inspiration for this Special Issue grew out of a meeting of consultants to the Heard Museum. Karen Swisher (Haskell Indian Nations University), Rayna Green (Smithsonian Institution), Tsianina Lomawaima (University of Arizona), and Brenda Child (University of Minnesota), were invited in 1995 by Curator of Fine Art Margaret Archuleta, under the auspices of a National Endowment for the Humanities Planning Grant, to help plan an exhibit on American Indians' boarding school experiences tentatively titled "Our Indian Schools" (scheduled to open at the Heard in the spring of 1999). We hope that this Special Issue will help stimulate continuing research, dialogue, and debate about American Indian people's experiences in, and opinions about, boarding school. It is clear that there is much that remains to be done. Large off-reservation schools, such as Sherman Institute in Riverside, CA, as well as many smaller schools, on and off reservations, remain undocumented. Most of the research to date has focused on the schools prior to World War II. The more contemporary era from the War to the present is wide open, inviting those with the interest and the commitment to help document, preserve, and understand the educational experiences of American Indian people. We are looking forward to what the future will bring. K. Tsianina Lomawaima, Guest Editor

An Interview with Eagle Man

Notes From the Editor: Free Exercise of Religion
William Lindley Holmes: You have written books such as Native Wisdom, and an absolutely wonderful book, Perceptions of the Natural Way. You are Ed McGaa, Eagle Man. I honor you as an elder and a teacher. Are you considered a Medicine Man? Eagle Man: I'm not a Medicine Man, I'm an author. But I've been around spirituality considerably more than many, many people that claim to be Medicine Men. Holmes: You're an Ogalalla Sioux? Eagle Man: Right. Born on the Reservation. So, at one time Indian religion was not popular at all, even Sioux religion. The missionaries were so effective to stamp it out that the majority of Indians actually turned against the old religion. They won't admit that, but that's exactly what happened. Just look at the tribes. They became Christians. They gave up the old ways and even ridiculed them. But I don't fault them because they were put through government indoctrination programs when the missionary and government agent worked hand in hand. Holmes: What did they actually do to the Indians to bring them to this?

"Education is one of the highest priorities of this administration," said Secretary Norton. "We are striving to leave no child behind in our efforts to improve the quality of education - including those at BIA schools across Indian country. The American Indian Education Foundation will play a vital role in supporting Indian students and bringing hope to their parents and communities." Secretary Norton was joined today by Acting Assistant Secretary - Indian Affairs Aurene M. Martin and AIEF Founding Director Lorraine P. Lesson Title: The Dawes Act
Marcia Steward
Lincoln-Way East High School
Summary:
A debatable question of American history is whether American Indian policy was necessary for the U.S. to progress. To address this question, students will identify the goals of the Dawes Act and research its consequences. Students will review primary and secondary sources to understand the effects of the Dawes Act on Native Americans. Vital Theme and Narrative: This lesson addresses the patterns of social and political interaction between the conquered and the conquerors: Native Americans and White America. Native Americans challenged "civilized" American society as the United States completed its Manifest Destiny to control the North American continent. This lesson addresses the consequences of "forced civilization". Habit of Mind: This lesson helps students understand how things happen and how things change, how human intentions matter, but also how their consequences are shaped by the means of carrying them out, in a tangle of purpose and process.
