21. General Education
Thus the second goalto expand one's intellectual perspectivesbecomes an integralrequirement in University of minnesota, Morris' general education program.

General Education
General Education courses form the foundation of learning in liberal arts education. These courses demonstrate a student's competency in a given skill or area and are usually taken before pursuit of a major field of study. Drawing from disciplines across the campus, general education courses represent a diverse and vital component of the undergraduate experience, providing a common foundation for successful study in a major field.
General education in the liberal arts has two important goals.
  • To become familiar with the process of liberal learningto acquire the intellectual skills, the communication skills and the framework of knowledge needed for successful advanced work.
  • To expand one's intellectual perspectives, gaining enough understanding of the principal areas of human endeavor to be able to continue learning in the future and to have a sense of the limits of one's knowledge. Successful study in a major field, in which one pursues knowledge in depth with the goal of becoming reasonably expert (college major) is supported by the work done in general education.
    Laying the foundation for education in the liberal arts is essential to establishing an intellectual framework for liberal learning and on developing the critical and creative thinking skills and communication skills needed for future work. Courses such as English Composition develop written communication skills that will be used throughout one's college and professional life. General education courses which emphasize development of such process skills can be useful to the working adult as well as the traditional student in pursuit of an undergraduate liberal arts degree.

    MINNESOTA GENERAL EDUCATION TRANSFER CURRICULUM REVIEW PROJECT The 2001 Minnesota State Legislature incorporated general education transfer language in the Education Omnibus Bill (Special Session S.F. 11) as follows: "By January 1, 2002, the board must implement the Minnesota transfer curriculum at all state colleges and universities. Once a course has met the criteria necessary for inclusion in the Minnesota transfer curriculum in any area of emphasis, the course must be accepted for full credit in that area of emphasis at all Minnesota state colleges and universities. By July 1, 2002, the board must publish an internet-based student manual that identifies and describes how general education courses at two-year MnSCU institutions transfer to state universities within the Minnesota state colleges and universities system." Likewise the MnSCU Board of Trustees adopted a related Chancellor’s goal (Chancellor’s Quarterly Report to the Board of Trustees, July 18, 2001) which stated: "The Office of the Chancellor will work with the colleges and universities to make it easier for students to transfer from one institution to another, as referenced in the Higher Education Omnibus Bill of 2001 (Special Session S.F. 11)." In response to these requirements

    Mission
    The mission of the Minnesota Association of School Administrators, an organization of visionary leaders, is to be the world-class change agent for education through membership empowerment and state of the art training, with a commitment to quality and a focus on the individual and collective welfare of its members.
    History
    MASA was organized in 1907 as a professional association to represent the needs of school superintendents. In 1968, MASA was incorporated as a private non-profit 501(c)(6) organization with regional representation of its statewide membership. In 1986, MASA purchased its building at 1884 Como, a short distance from the State Capitol in St. Paul, to house the Association offices and provide a place for board meetings and small group committee meetings. As MASA grew and the profile of its members changed to include a more diverse representation of school leaders, the Association leadership recognized the need to restructure. 1996-97 kicked off the new

    $7.8 Million in Special Education General Supervision Enhancement Grants Awarded to 24 States, Territories and Outlying Areas
    More than $7.8 million in grants have been awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to 24 states, territories and outlying areas for special education improvement efforts as part of a competitive process to help reform and improve services for children with disabilities. A total of 42 states, Puerto Rico and outlying territories competed for the awards, known as General Supervision Enhancement Grants. The grants are intended to complement and support the accountability system developed by the department’s Office of Special Education Programs by assisting states and lead agencies to develop and improve their infrastructure for holding states, districts and schools accountable for improving student achievement. "Accountability for improved performance rests at the heart of our efforts to improve American education," said U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige. "These awards will help move us toward assuring that our special education programs are offering quality educational services to all students with disabilities so that no child is left behind." Activities supported by the grants include:
    • developing data-driven, evidence-based state monitoring systems that focus on areas that have the greatest impact on better outcomes for children with disabilities;
