A Look at the 2000 Minnesota Salary Survey
What are Personal Care and Service Workers Making?
Do geography and industry influence wages for personal care and service workers? The 2000 Minnesota Salary Survey can help provide answers to this question. To examine the influence geography can exert over wages, this article considers three representative occupations for personal care and service workers in the Minneapolis-St. Paul seven-county metropolitan area (defined in this article as Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington counties) and in the "Balance of State," which in this article is defined as all Minnesota counties outside of the seven-county Twin Cities area. In order to be certain that differences in mean wages are not simply a result of sampling procedures, the occupations discussed are those with sizable employment and which exhibit a statistically significant difference in mean wages. Industry impact on wages is also examined using the same three occupations in the state.

Graphic scale from a 1595 map, from David Greenhood, Mapping (1951), p. 45. We are pleased to say that this year we have again increased the number of sessions organised by the historical geography network to 18. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who organised a session for your hard work. We have sessions on a wide variety of themes including environment, agriculture, transport, industry, urban development, GIS, metadata, electronic publishing and cultural geography with speakers coming from all over the world. We are also hosting a book session on Anne K. Knowles book Past Time, Past Place: GIS for history published by ESRI Press in which we hope to explore the issues raised in the book and more broadly, issues concerning the use and usefulness of GIS in historical research. The sessions listed below are those whose main sponsor is the historical geography network. A full timetable, that also includes abstracts for each paper is also available either sorted by network or time Most of the practical details necessary for attending the conference are published by the SSHA wewould like to draw your attention to the requirements of the SSHA to pre-register for the conference. The conference venue is the Millennium Hotel, St. Louis, if you intend to stay here we suggest booking as soon as possible.

2001 Annual Meeting, November 15-18, Chicago, Illinois Historical Geography Network
Graphic scale from a 1595 map, from David Greenhood, Mapping (1951), p. 45. We have got together a very strong and coherent program under the historical geography banner for the 2001 conference. I am delighted to say that this includes sessions from the Center for Spatially Integrated Social Science, the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative, the US National Historical GIS, with many individuals who have also contributed sessions. The final session is a roundtable in which I hope we can draw together ideas on the use of geographical thinking in general and GIS in particular. We have a total of nine sessions who have listed historical geography as their primary network. A provisional timetable for these is given below. Most of the practical details necessary for attending the conference are published by the SSHA I would like to draw your attention to the requirements of the SSHA to pre-register for the conference. The conference venue is the Palmer House Hilton, if you intend to stay here I suggest booking early as it will fill up. There are cheaper places to stay in Chicago. If anyone has any good suggestions please let me know so I can pass them on. Finally, the 2002 conference will be in St. Louis, October 24-27. To get the arrangements for this off to a flying start it would be great if people could bring suggestions about this to the

The University of Minnesota is one of America's major research universities. It regularly ranks among the top ten in the United States in receipt of federal grants for research and development. The University offers students a comprehensive range of programs, collaboration with faculty in cutting-edge research, and the opportunity to learn from colleagues drawn from around the world. The Minneapolis campus is divided by the Mississippi River into East and West Banks, each with a distinctive character. The College of Liberal Arts, at the center of a major research university and home to 500 faculty in 30 departments, strives to provide an education that emphasizes both breadth and depth of learning in the fundamental disciplines of knowledge. The goal of CLA's undergraduate liberal arts education is to prepare the graduate to be well-rounded, broad-thinking, and fair-minded; adaptable, creative, and ethical; an analytical thinker, articulate speaker, and excellent writer. CLA endeavors to prepare each graduate to engage in dynamic lifelong learning, regardless of the individual career path. Up-to-date computer facilities are available to all students registered at the University of Minnesota at several locations around campus. The University assigns all registered students an e-mail account, and each student has access to the Internet.
