Canadian Shield , from which iron ore is decreasingly extracted. The Vermilion and Cuyuna ranges (discovered in 1884 and 1911) are virtually depleted, and the once rich Mesabi range (1890) has also declined. South of the iron country, famous for its old-time boom towns, lie rolling hills. In the south and the west are prairies, fertile farming country. The state has more than 11,000 lakes and numerous streams and rivers. The rivers feed three great river systems: The Red River of the north and its tributaries in the west run north through Manitoba's lakes to Hudson Bay; streams in the east run into Lake Superior, and eventually into the St. Lawrence; and the Mississippi flows south from Minnesota headwaters above Lake Itasca, gathering volume from the waters of the St. Croix and Minnesota rivers before leaving the state. The beauty of Minnesota's lakes and dense green forests, as seen in Voyageurs National Park, has long attracted vacationers, and there is excellent fishing in the state's many rivers, lakes, and streams. Also of interest to tourists are the Grand Portage and Pipestone national monuments (see

    B. A., University of Minnesota, Philosophy and Geography M. A., University of Minnesota, Geography Ph. D., University of Minnesota, Geography RESEARCH INTERESTS My work focuses on the development of and interactions among:
    • communication technologies (geographic information systems, the written work, the map);
    • geographic ideas (space, place, nature);
    • the broader social, cultural, and legal contexts within which these ideas and technologies are situated.
    Recent projects have concerned (1) the nature of the written work in geography, and the development of that work in the context of traditions of scientific representation and rhetoric, and (2) the cultural, social, and ethical issues surrounding the development and use of geographic information systems, global positioning systems, and remote surveillance systems. I am currently working on (1) an interpretation of traditional theorizations of property and privacy as based on inadequate understandings of place and space, and an attempt to develop a more adequate theorization; (2) a study of the ethical problems raised by spatio-visual representations in (for example) geodemographics and public health, and the proposal of a regulatory frameworkbased in part on an analysis of alternatives from other countriesfor the remedying of those problems; and (3) a study of the ways in which standards-setting is a means for the dissemination by particular groups of cultural ideas and practices.

    MN Minnesota's name comes from the Dakota (Sioux) word for the Minnesota River's "sky-tinted waters." In 1858, Minnesota became the 32nd state. Minnesota is an important producer of agricultural and manufactured goods. The state's history is the story of the development of its natural resources. The fur-bearing animals of the forests first attracted fur traders. Next, the fertile soil brought farmers, who poured into the region from the Eastern States and from Europe. The thick forests of tall pines attracted lumberjacks from Maine, Michigan and Wisconsin. Minnesota's scenic beauty, sparkling lakes and deep pine woods make it a vacation wonderland. Campers, canoeists and hikers can explore its vast northern wilderness areas. Der Name Minnesota stammt von der Bezeichnung der Dakota (Sioux) Indianer für den Minnesota Fluss - "den Himmel reflektierendes Wasser" - ab. 1858 wurde Minnesota der 32. Staat. Minnesota
