The Elmer L. Andersen Library is uniquely suited to the task of preserving the records of human thought and achievement for the citizens of Minnesota. Here are stored over 1.5 million volumes of books, manuscripts, illustrations and artifacts, protected and preserved for posterity. The practical realization of Governor Andersen's vision of the "fourth mission" of the University, the Elmer L. Andersen Library preserves, maintains, and passes on to future generations the raw materials for research and discovery. How can any building ensure that, when the inquiries of tomorrow's researchers emerge, these resources will still exist? How does one safely store and protect treasures such as the manuscripts of Pulitzer Prize- winning poet John Berryman, or the corporate records documenting the emergence of the electronic computer industry? How does one preserve the institutional history and evocative memories of the University of Minnesota, from the evolution of Goldie Gopher to the campus masterplan of architect Cass Gilbert? Will the stories, personal and institutional, of immigration and social welfare be available to future researchers? And what of the books, journals, and non-print media from other libraries throughout the state? Will they be retained, even when space in these greater-Minnesota libraries is no longer available?

While a dog may be man's best friend, a librarian is an even better friend for the family historian! Every library has 'hidden' resourcesfinding aids, vertical files, pamphlets, maps, indexes, etc.which may be not included in either an on-line or card catalog. Libraries come in different varieties, too.
    • Academic libraries, under the auspices of an educational institution, typically have a variety of resources needed for their students. Courses such as history, geography, and sociology require reference books that family historians may need for their research. For example, the Borchert Map Library at the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis has detailed topographic maps for many European countries and many other resources their students will need, but which also can help family historians pin down places of origin or track migration routes. One fantastic feature of academic libraries is their availability, especially during evening hours. They may hold personal papers contributed by former students or faculty or house special collections in areas of special interest (e.g., in St. Paul: Concordia College houses the Germanic Genealogy Society's library, and the University of St. Thomas has many ethnic resources). Many have on-line catalogs, available for browsing.

British Periodicals at Minnesota: The Early Nineteenth Century
    Compiled by Michael Hancher
    February 1995
    Introduction
Perhaps there is no single feature of the English literary history of the nineteenth century, not even the enormous popularisation and multiplication of the novel, which is so distinctive and characteristic as the development in it of periodical literature. — George Saintsbury (1896), quoted by Laurel Brake, Subjugated Knowledges: Journalism, Gender and Literature in the Nineteenth Century (London: Macmillan, 1994), 1. The University of Minnesota Libraries hold a relatively strong collection of nineteenth–century periodicals. The following handlist reports many periodicals that began publication in Great Britain between 1801 and 1850, and also some that began their careers in the eighteenth century or earlier and continued to publish after 1800. Additions and corrections are welcome. (Thanks are due to Josef L. Altholz for several additions.) This list excludes daily newspapers, serialized monographs, and microforms; however, a few reprints are included. It is arranged chronologically by date of first issue, even when the Libraries lack that issue; and then alphabetically by title. (In the catalogue entries gathered below, some dates are retrospective title-page dates, later than the date of the first issue.) Some variable journal titles are consolidated; others are not. Some of these periodicals are available in the Periodicals Room of Wilson Library; most are housed in the Wilson Sub-Basement Annex. A few other titles are held by the Department of Special Collections and Rare Books (111 Andersen Library); the Wangensteen History of Medicine and Biology Library (568 Diehl Hall); and by other collections. State’s budget woes dampen National Library Week celebrations
Monday, April 7 - Celebration of National Library Week (April 6-12) takes on somber overtones as libraries throughout the state anticipate proposed budget cuts. Library supporters are asking community members to let their legislators know that they view libraries as essential public services. “There is no doubt that area libraries are looking at potential budget cuts and wondering how they can continue to provide good service to their communities,” said Ann Hutton, Executive Director of Southeastern Libraries Cooperating (SELCO). “What policymakers need to appreciate is that local libraries are already making good use of public dollars. Library boards and staff literally stretch dollars as far as possible to keep good service in place.” [more] Legislative Update Thursday, March 19 - All library related bills have been introduced.
