Now and in the future, libraries and information centers must deal with transfer of data and information in all formats. School library media personnel must meet the information needs, ranging from recreational to research, of everyone from preschool children to young adults. Library Media Education offers graduate and undergraduate students instruction and experience in:

How do I obtain a license as a school library media specialist?
In Minnesota the license is called "School Library Media Specialist" and you need to have an authorized institution certify that you meet the competencies established by the state. At St. Cloud State University, the Center for Information Media (CIM) of the College of Education is authorized to certify individuals for licensure as Library Media Specialists.

What are the employment prospects for a school library media specialist?
The state recently commissioned the Dept. of Children, Families, and Learning [ http://cfl.state.mn.us/ ] to undertake a survey of teacher supply and demand in Minnesota. Library media was one of the areas where Minnesota districts experienced the greatest difficulty filling positions for the 2000-01 school year. It was projected to be one of the areas of difficulty in the future as well. (Report available online, Adobe Acrobat Reader required for viewing: http://cfl.state.mn.us/newsrel/teachsh.pdf

State Library Agency MLA/MEMO supports the existence of a strong state library agency to coordinate statewide library issues and services. The Minnesota library community has come together to identify a clear vision for library service in the state and requires state government leadership to carry that vision forward. MLA/MEMO requests that the Governor and Legislators provide funding for the restoration of mandated services through adequate staffing and operations. Regional Library Systems MLA/MEMO supports an annual appropriation increase for regional public library system funding in the amount of $1 million. While funding for public library support has increased only negligibly since 1992, demands for increased services from public libraries are growing at an astounding rate. Children’s programs, literacy efforts, and support for multicultural populations are all services supported by the sharing of resources that has been fostered by regional public libraries supplying interlibrary loan, automated systems and delivery of materials. MLA/MEMO supports an annual appropriation increase for multi-type library systems in the amount of $116,000. This increase will allow multi-type systems to continue to develop and improve library services throughout the state of Minnesota through sharing of resources among all types of libraries; communication and cooperative planning for more efficient use of resources; and continuing education and staff development opportunities.

What is SELCO?
SELCO is an acronym that stands for Southeastern Libraries Cooperating. SELCO is one of 12 public library regions specifically created to strengthen, improve and promote public library service. [Minnesota Statutes 134.20.]
What is SELS?
SELS is an acronym that stands for Southeast Library System. SELS is one of seven multicounty, multitype library systems. The multitype systems complement the services of existing networks and improve library and information services by working through all types of libraries. [Minnesota Statutes 134.351] Why two different organizations? The public library fills a unique role and strives to serve all users, of all ages and SELCO's very specific mission is to coordinate and provide public library service in southeastern Minnesota. The school, the library and community working together to ensure the school success of each child Executive Summary: Together the Hennepin County Library and the Robbinsdale Schools will pave the way for a new approach to ensuring that the children of our community succeed in school and as life long learners. Using the newly formulated Minnesota Graduation Rule as a focus, library and school staff will use technology to break down traditional barriers of access to information. Four areas of cooperation are identified
  • A combined response to Minnesota Graduation Rule information needs Leveraging technology to improve access Improving community partnerships to encourage life-long learning Cooperating on opening the West Metro FAIR School.
  • Background: Robbinsdale Area Schools and the Hennepin County Library system have long been neighbors, helping students and the community members with their information needs. Some cooperative efforts have been tried in the past and some are currently underway. Both organizations have evolved from different missions, governing bodies and funding sources. However they also share many of the same customers and goals. Because the information needs of our customers are changing and increasing, we can no longer be neighbors. A new partnership is needed for both to be the easily accessible and effective source of information. This partnership should present a seamless image in the users' minds: both organizations working together as one information resource.

Article by Doug Johnson Home Articles Contact information Column title, periodical, and issue: Media Trends in the Midwest, Media Educator (Georgia Library Media Association), Winter 1997 While I am flattered at being asked to write about what is happening around the Midwest, I have to say up front that you need to read this article knowing that:
  • my information about the things that are happening in states other than Minnesota comes primarily what I read on LM_Net and from attending state library media conferences in Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois; and I tend to be very much an optimist when it comes to school media programs and education in general.
  • How much you read is generalization based on fact, and how much is wishful thinking is difficult for even ME to separate. Be warned, Readers! Media programs in the Upper Midwest overall are better than they have ever been, and the right kind of library/media specialist is more valued than ever before. There are certainly exceptions. School districts facing systemic economic distress (Rockford, IL, for example) find the axe raised above their media programs, and librarians who cling to a text-only mind set find themselves often at odds with their students, staff, administration and the rest of the profession. But in the job-applicant glutted field of education, well-prepared media specialists find themselves in somewhat short supply. There is even a legislative initiative in Iowa to recruit teachers willing to go into media driven by the large number of non-certified media specialists now employed in schools in that state.
