CDC awards funds to universities for research on how to prevent disease and injuries
As part of its new strategy to strengthen and expand the nation's public health research programs at universities, CDC announced today grants of $12.5 million to fund 50 research projects at academic health centers, research centers and university-affiliated programs across the country. The funding is part of CDC's Prevention Research Initiative, an effort to link the talents and skills of university-based scientists with the resources of health departments, community-based programs, and national organizations. "The awards ensure that public health research activities address problems affecting the nation's communities," says Dr. Jeffrey P. Koplan, director of the CDC. "The grants will help CDC and its partners conduct research that can directly improve community health and reduce the need for medical care." The grants cover a range of subjects, including prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, asthma, genetics and home, workplace and recreational injuries. (See complete list attached.) Activities include centers of excellence in prevention research, research projects to inform public policy, and research investigator training and development. The average grant is approximately $250,000. Most projects are funded for three years.

The Media Center Why Are Media Positions Cut? How Not to Survive! by Mary Alice Anderson Lead Media Specialist, Winona Middle School, Winona, Minnesota MultiMedia Schools • May/June 2002 Let's examine practices that illustrate how not to survive. Only when we face the "fatal errors" that can be made can we get to higher ground. H ave you noticed that there are fewer media specialists than in the past?
  • In an Iowa district, full-time elementary media specialists were replaced with half-time media specialists; in other schools clerical time was reduced.
In a large Illinois school district, cuts were supposed to be made at all levels, but the only cuts actually made impacted the media centers at each building. A media specialist who left was not replaced.
In a Southern state, elementary media specialists were given additional teaching assignments such as teaching reading an hour and a half a day, yet were listed as full-time media specialists in the building.
Almost an entire district media department, including its director, was eliminated in a large Minnesota district a year ago. In another district, full-time media program paraprofessionals have replaced media specialists in all elementary schools. This spring even more media specialist positions in Minnesota are in danger because of state funding limitations and the failure of many school districts to pass operating fund initiatives.

What's Happening? Why?

The master’s degree program in Educational Media and Technology is designed to meet the needs of licensed teachers who wish to add the School Library Media Specialist license to their existing teaching license and obtain a master’s degree at the same time. Students without a teaching license may enroll in the program also, but completion of the master’s degree will not give them the license as well. See Students Without a Teaching License.
Philosophy
The field of Educational Media and Technology is rapidly changing as new and emerging technologies affect the way that information is gathered, stored, retrieved, and utilized. Libraries and media centers are no longer print storage facilities, but are becoming access points to the larger and more complex world of digital resources. As such, they are society's window on the future where integration and use of all information resources will be the key to success. Program Description Goals of the Program Media Specialist Licensure Transfer Credit
Program Description
The Educational Media and Technology Program seeks to meet the needs of people working in rapidly changing school library/media and technology settings. It meets the Minnesota Board of Teaching outcomes for the school library media specialist licensure endorsement. The program is designed to be conveniently available to working professionals via an online format. The online format is available only to graduate students. The courses at the graduate level are no longer being offered on campus. This distance graduate program meets licensure requirements for school library media specialists in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North and South Dakota. We are currently working with Iowa to obtain their approval as well.

Ella Cross, Assistant Professor

Peter Nordgren, Assistant Professor Programs The emphasis of the Library Science program is on preparing students for positions in school library media centers. However, coursework in the program may be useful in obtaining selected positions in academic, specialized and public libraries. Additionally, the program provides a solid foundation toward an advanced degree in Library Science. Competencies developed in the required and elective courses of the Library Science curriculum will satisfy requirements for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) Initial Instructional Library Media Specialist License (901), the DPI Instructional Library Media Specialist License (902), and the Minnesota Media Generalist License. Library science students expecting to be certified for service in a school library/media center must complete a professional experience. To complete the Library Science minor and qualify for the 901 license requires completion of 24 semester hours of coursework, not including the professional experience. Students seeking teaching certification in either Wisconsin or Minnesota will fulfill the professional experience requirement during their student teaching. Candidates for the 901 license who are already teacher certified and are looking to enhance their professional credentials will fulfill the professional experience requirement by registering for TED 445: Supervised Practice for In-Service Teachers. Typically, teacher-certified students enhancing their credentials will need to complete at least 15 hours of the coursework before being considered for professional experience assignment.
