General Information
Primary School Curriculum

Children are taught in self-contained, single-grade level classes. Individual Learning Plans, developed in consultation with students, parents, and teachers, guide each student's learning. Technical literacy begins in kindergarten, and every classroom has at least one computer with Internet access. Media centers and computer labs at each school are staffed by licensed media specialists who provide multimedia technology education. Curriculum choices reflect research-based programs that support the performance requirements of Minnesota's graduation standards and have a proven record of success with young learners. Art, music, and physical education are integrated into the curriculum, and both primary schools employ licensed teachers who specialize in each area.
Checking your student's progress
Individual Learning Plans are distributed three times yearly during the primary school years: at conferences that include the parents, student, and teacher, and at the end of the year. In addition, you may request a conference at any time during the school year to check on your child's progress or discuss a specific issue.
Enrichment Program
Reaching, Enriching, and Accelerating to Creative Heights (REACH) is Westonka's all-school enrichment program. Based on Harvard University's Schoolwide Enrichment Model, REACH incorporates interdisciplinary activities with a strong element of community and parent involvement.

OUTSIDE! Have mercy? Issue proves divisive Ahead by 80 points, Clairton (Pa.) kept dishing humiliation. Its star stayed on the basketball court so she could chase a scoring record. Winchester Thurston, the high school team taking the beating, watched as the Clairton coach called timeouts in the fourth quarter. But that wasn't even the worst of it in a Jan. 30 game in Pittsburgh. "Their players were mocking us on the floor, saying stuff like, 'Hey, we better play good defense, they could really score some points on us,' then they would laugh," Winchester Thurston guard Erin Schulz says. The National Federation of State High School Associations already has a mercy rule established for softball: 15-run lead after three innings; 10-run lead after five innings; 90-minute time limit on a public facility. Full Story - USA Today Gophers Post Two Shutouts in Opener Home openers are supposed to be scheduled so the host team will win. The Minnesota softball team was able to follow that rule with its home opener Tuesday. The Gophers shut out Wisconsin-Green Bay in both games 9-0 and 3-0.

Administration proposal for transfer of Perkins funds to NCLB Act
President Bush's budget for Fiscal Year 2004, released February 4th, contained a proposal that could shift Perkins funds away from career and technical education, using those funds to alleviate costs and pressures associated with No Child Left Behind. Federal support for career and technical education was described as "ineffective." The current proposal would, in effect, eliminate the federal focus on career and technical education and redirect funds to other activities that supports career and technical education programs in secondary schools and community and technical colleges. The proposal seeks to:
  • Cease Perkins' focus on Career and Technical education Create block granting funds with No Child Left Behind Eliminate local grant distribution formulas Cut grant funding by $314.5 million
