Choice of Electives Introduction Many suggestions on choosing electives in preparation for post-high school training and jobs will have exceptions and must be thought of as general guides. Often the suggestions are minimum requirements and not really the desired preparation. Sometimes persons with special talents are given special consideration. FOR THE COLLEGE BOUND Minimum Requirements for University of Wisconsin System For freshmen entering in the fall, a minimum of 17 academic high school credits is required. Thirteen of the 17 units must meet the high school graduation requirements established by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as follows: English 4 Social Science 3 Mathematics 3 (Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2) Natural Science 3 (Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry) The remaining four units are required to be from the above areas or foreign language or fine arts, computer science, and other academic areas: 4 Total: 17 Each institution may specify additional unit requirements within the four remaining units and may specify required content for all 17 units. NOTE: Students and parents should contact counselors for yearly update on admissions Standardized Test Scores: The University of Wisconsin Systems and all Minnesota Colleges and Universities require all entering freshmen to submit American College Test (ACT) scores. This requirement may be waived for freshmen applicants who require special and unique exemptions.

Presented by Darcel Lewis, MnSCU Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity
March 13, 2001 The U.S. Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights (OCR), has mandated that all higher education institutions, including Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, conduct on-site reviews for colleges that receive federal vocational education equity funds. These on-site reviews require both review of college information relating to the participation of women and other protected groups in vocational education programs, and direct interviews with students, faculty, and administrators at the campus. There are four reviews done every academic year. The review team consists of employees who can articulate system office and campus perspectives. The Office for Civil Rights is a law enforcement agency charged with enforcing the federal civil rights laws that prohibit discrimination of the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability and age in programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance. $225.7 Million for Minnesota Students
FOR RELEASE:
November 14, 2001 Contact: : Jim Bradshaw
"Schools across America are working to meet President Bush's call to leave no child behind," Secretary Paige said. "Educating America's students is primarily a state and local issue, but the department is working to support the needs of Minnesota's disadvantaged students without unnecessary federal red tape." Following are among the highlights of the grant award programs for Minnesota:
  • Title I grants, the largest federal education activity for pre-K through grade 12, helps districts close the achievement gap between high- and low-poverty schools by targeting resources based on the number of children in poverty. Even Start, a Title I component, supports local family literacy projects that integrate early childhood education, adult literacy or basic education, as well as parenting education for families. $77.3 million.

ACCREDITATION ISSUE: SCHOOL OF ADVERTISING by Terhi Topi , Fulbright Advising Center, Helsinki and Amy Lezberg , New England Resource Center for Higher Education
From Terhi: Institution:
Brainco-the Minneapolis School of Advertising,
Minneapolis, MN
Type: Two-year vocational
Field: Advertising
Licensure: Licensed by the Minnesota Higher Education Services (MHESO) Accreditation: Does not appear in the CHEA book, have not been able to locate any other accreditation either. The national agency for government student aid is again requesting information on whether this is a publicly regulated institution. Since this is a vocational institution, I thought I better double-check my answer, which would go something like this: < /P> Barinco is licensed by MHESO to operate in the state of Minnesota. Thus it falls under public control within that state. This institution is not accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the Council of Higher Education Accreditation and the F ederal Department of Education. Therefore, the academic credit and diploma received in this institution may not be recognized outside the state of Minnesota and by other educational institutions within the United States. State licensure means that the institution may operate in that state. This is a vocational program. It is not accredited by the ACCSCT or ACICS. Would Brainco be eligible for such accreditation? I understand that ACCSCT accredits technology program s. I did not find an accrediting agency on the DOE list for Advertising. So, if there were no accrediting agency for vocational advertising schools, would the state recognition be sufficient. Would this program be recognized in other states as well? Wh at about within the state of Minnesota? Are state licensed vocational programs generally accepted even without accreditation?
