Without fresh leads, Modesto case risks fading from public spotlight
By John Simerman CONTRA COSTA TIMES
Kristen Modafferi's room back home in North Carolina remains just as she left it. Her awards and artwork hang from the walls. Last month, her mother put up a Christmas stocking, as she does every year for the daughter she can't find anywhere. Modafferi vanished one summer day in 1997, an 18-year-old scholarship student visiting the Bay Area for a summer of adventure, work and photo classes at UC Berkeley. The mysterious case, like the Christmas Eve disappearance of pregnant 27-year-old Laci Peterson of Modesto, drew a flurry of media and thousands of tips from across the country. Five years later, Debbie Modafferi sits at home, tapping out e-mail every few weeks to an Oakland police investigator. Just to keep in touch, to keep up hope, keep pressing. This is what happens when the trail goes dark.

Although we are dedicated first and for most to finding Cyndi, along with finding the truth to the events that took place the night Cyndi vanished from her safe zone. Cyndi Search decided to extend themselves to assisting other families who are facing the grueling task of finding their loved ones, who have been victimized and thrown into the category "MISSING ADULTS" Although we would never turn our backs on a child. This has forced us to open our eyes and inform Society. That they must not discriminate against any missing persons. Why, you ask? It does not matter what the race, age or social status of any missing person is. They are still "SOMEBODY'S CHILD'!!

Dear Parents, As a child walking home from school, I was approached by a knife wielding stranger who attempted to abduct me. At eight years old, my gut instinct saved my life! In those days, commonly, we were not educated about safety. In my home of Northern California we walked to our bus stop alone, ran through the apple orchards, played in the creek and rode our horses through the mountains, all unsupervised. Our world has certainly changed! Currently, as parents, we are afraid to let our children go out in the front yard alone, let alone walk to school. We watch the news headlines and hear stories of children who have been abducted right out of their bedrooms from the security of our own homes. Our world has become a scary place for our children, but there are many things we can do to teach them how to protect themselves. Who would have thought we would need to teach our children about predators, molestation and what they must do if they are abducted? The fact is, we can't begin to think about educating our children without first educating ourselves! We are proud to endorse "Situations," a game that addresses the topics we find so difficult to discuss with our children. The "Situations" game is interactive, providing you the opportunity to educate yourself as well as your child! The topics are straight forward and give you honest information about things you may not have thought about teaching your child. Though the issue of kidnapping is frightening, if we approach the topic like another fact of life, we have the opportunity to empower them, not frighten them. Though no amount of information may save every child from a potential abduction, the information contained within this game can certainly give your child a fighting chance.

Mother Missing! Please Help. Sharon Shechter
Help 3 children find their mother. It's always sad when children lose a mother. This page is a plea to you to help them find her. Please imagine the pain that Sharon's family is going through and do what you can to help. Each day gets harder, says a family member, because they have to go to bed and wake up knowing that this mother of three is not with her children. "I hope we hear something," says a distraught aunt. A $5,000 reward is offered, but don't do it for the money. Do it because you'd want it done for you if your mother disappeared. If you've seen her, please call (585) 428-5310 or (585) 423-9300. If you haven't seen her, please click here to pass this on to others who might. Case on file at http://www.rinokids.com/Adults/Schecter/index.html We hope you help. Origins: At about 5:00 PM on 9 December 2001, 36-year-old Sharon Shechter disappeared from the vicinity of her Perinton, New York, home and has not been seen or heard from since. Three days later her Dodge Caravan was discovered at a Days Inn in the nearby town of Gates; police found blood inside the vehicle, but they have not yet uncovered evidence of foul play.

My close friend, Wendy Bott, has been missing since Tuesday night (June 12). The circumstances surrounding her disappearance are strange, and at this time there are no solid leads as to what happened. That's why we could use your help. Please send the attached flyer to everyone in your email address book. Because we have no idea what happened, from our perspective she could be anywhere. So we're NOT limiting this flier's exposure only to Los Angeles, or only to the entertainment industry. For those who do not know Wendy, she is originally from Chicago, and has been a freelance writer/producer for FX and other networks for over six years. She is also currently in post production for an independent film she co-wrote and co-directed. We appreciate your help in getting out the word. Thanks, Jeff Payne Origins: Los Angeles filmmaker Wendy Bott was last seen alive on 12 June 2001. The circumstances surrounding her disappearance were odd indeed

http://www.missingpersons.org/factfile.html
National Missing Persons Charity - Factfile 2002 National Missing Persons Helpline (NMPH) was established as a charity in 1992 to advise and support missing people and those who are left behind. It gives priority to the vulnerable - the very young, the old, the sick and distressed. The Helpline has the most detailed 'missing' database in the country, registering both vulnerable and non-vulnerable missing people. The charity also offers its services to organisations outside the family circle; the police, social workers, hospitals, care homes, foster homes and international organisations. The Helpline is a charity dependent entirely on voluntary donations. THE SCALE OF THE PROBLEM
According to Home Office estimates, about 210 000 people are reported missing in the UK each year. The vast majority return safe and sound within 72 hours - but thousands do not; the distress experienced during this time is when families need us most. State agencies such as the police are often unable to help leaving NMPH to fill the gap. NMPH receives thousands of missing persons reports every year, but on a positive note the charity helps to resolve 70% of cases it works on. It receives more than 100 000 calls per year . WHO GOES MISSING
Opinions differ on who counts as a missing person. The police do not look for people except in cases of vulnerability or crime. The Salvation Army's Family Tracing Service concentrates on blood relatives and brings thousands back together each year, but does not handle other categories.

What to do if your child is missing.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF!!!! ...This is very important...
You are the vital link to your child. You are the one who can motivate others to look for your child. You must take care of yourself so you can have the strength to search for your child. Please... eat well, sleep, keep in contact with family and friends, find a way to relax and exercise. Don't feel guilty about doing any of these things. You need to hold on to your sanity and stay healthy and strong for the day your child returns home. YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE!!!
"NEVER ASSUME THAT YOUR CHILD WILL NOT BE ABDUCTED, ABUSED, EXPLOITED OR MISSING"
In the United States alone, there are around 1,000,000 children reported missing annually. It is estimated that between 200 and 300 children are abducted by strangers each year and that approximately 115,000 more children are victims of an attempted abduction. Obviously, there are many more missing children throughout the world. Did you also know in the that in U.S.A.there were over 41,000 adults missing last year, as well?
It is also believed that the actual numbers are much greater since a considerable number of missing children is never reported.
Law enforcement is the key factor. You, who surf the internet worldwide, are going to be the EYES and EARS of Bannerkids. And from now on, we at Bannerkids will call you "The Posse".
The Bannerkids Program believes that, if there are 1,000,000 missing kids in the United States as well as 41,000 missing adults, we can take advantage of the 143,000,000 people who surf the internet daily, to look for these missing children. The odds of recovering these kids and adults are pretty good. The important thing to remember is that we are all children of God.
