The child becomes a vulnerable target as soon as he/she leaves the safety of family. His/her fantasy can quickly become a nightmare for him/her, because he/she is exposed to chance meetings, which can prove to be dangerous for him/her: alcohol, drug, crime, sexual exploitation, etc. A child does not run away without reason. If no family conflict seems to justify the departure of the child, he/she might be having problems at school or facing violence of peers, same age kids or older than him/her or even adults beyond suspicion. Very often, the parents who are confronted with this situation feel guilty, run down or even paralyzed. It is of primary importance that the parents keep their cool and a rational spirit when they discover running away of their child. Nonfamily abduction. Non family abductions are very rare in Canada. In 1999, Canada reported a total of 52 stranger abductions. Studies indicates that nonfamily abductor tend to look for children between the ages of 0-10 (baby snatchers) and the age of 14-15 (female prostitution). Family abduction. In 1999, Canada reported a total of 358 parental abductions. Of these reported cases, 184 of these children were abducted by a parent or guardian who did not have custody order whereas 174 children were abducted by a parent who had a custody order. Frequencies of parental abductions follows a seasonal trend : they peak at the end of summer, Christmas and Easter vacations. Runaway child. Out of the 60 360 reported missing children in Canada in 1999, 47 585 were runaways (78 %). British Columbia had the highest number of runaways, with 14 999 cases, followed by Ontario with 12 290. Youth runaway for many reasons, including to rebel, assert their independence or to flee an environment of abuse. But what if that means we have to agree to receive junk faxes? A few months ago, I suddenly started receiving a couple of junk faxes a week. I was a bit surprised because I don't give out my fax number a lot, and I'd never received any unsolicited faxes before. Most of the faxes promoted local dentists or chiropractors and seemed innocent enough. Several were a bit sleazy, however, like the one with a phony newspaper clipping in which a supposed reporter wrote that "you're crazy if you don't at least call" a certain mortgage brokerage firm to find out about the great refinancing deals they are offering. Intentions aside, each of these fax-senders were breaking the law. The federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act prohibits unsolicited commercial faxes and allows recipients to sue businesses for as much as $500 per fax sent. As the faxes kept coming, I pondered what I should do. Even after dismissing the notion of collecting enough faxes to fund an early retirement with a mass of lawsuits, I was still reluctant to call the 800 number each fax-sender provided for removal from its database. After all, it's a bad idea to comply with a spammer's removal instructions; so in the era of caller ID, should I follow the instructions of someone who is unquestionably committing a crime?
