Street-smart kids discover wisdom at rural academy
By Larry Bivins
Detroit News Washington Bureau
PINEY WOODS, Miss. - Winston Glass appreciates the decision that brought him from the treacherous streets of Detroit to a pastoral campus in the deep South. "Piney Woods is like a bullet-proof vest," Glass, 17, said about the school where he has spent his past four years. "You don't have to worry about anything here." Daniel Ishmel of Lansing agreed. "I don't have to worry about drive-bys (shootings) or that someone might try to get me for my jacket or my sneakers." Glass and Ishmel are among about 10 students from Michigan who have left inner-city public schools for a more tranquil and disciplined life at Piney Woods Country Life School, a historically black private boarding school in rural Mississippi. For many of the 286 students enrolled in seventh grade through high school at Piney Woods, the 65-acre campus set on 2,000 acres of land is a haven from the everyday dangers and distractions that hamper learning in many of the nation's public schools.

Recently released in paperback, Adams treats the history thoroughly, with respect and honesty, yet avoids the trap of over-sentimentalizing the assimliation story. Includes very good accounts of the personnel associated with the boarding schools of the period. Lays out the events that led to the final demise of Carlisle. This book is a good basic Indian Education primer with strong emphasis on Carlisle. Archuleta, Margaret L., Brenda J. Child, and K. Among those were the friends and relatives of Daklugie Frank Mangus, Chapo, Kanseah, Zhunni, and Ramona Chihuahua, who became his wife. Among the 186 Native American children buried in Indian Cemetery at Carlisle, 54 are Apache children. Many of these were the Chiricahua who spent their last days at the Indian School.

Privately Financed Scholarships
Parents in a growing number of cities and states have access to privately financed programs that support school choice by offering students partial scholarships.
For specific programs and schools, go to:
National Private Scholarship Programs

Private Schools and Related Support Services

Background on Privately Financed Scholarships
A wide range of local and national programs and foundations provide preschool - 12th grade students with scholarships to attend private schools. An estimated 60,000 students in more than 80 cities used private scholarship programs in the 2000-01 school year.
Demand for such scholarships far outstrips supply: parents submitted more than 1.25 million applications for the 40,000 scholarships awarded by the Children's Scholarship Fund in April 1999.

A joint hearing was held on Monday, January 25, before the House and Senate Juvenile Justice Committees in support of proceeding with a 3-year pilot program. David Watkins , of Adams and Reese , coordinated the hearing and introduced the speakers, as former Coalition for Children volunteer. Mike Walters, Sam Bounds, and Dale Sullivan testified on behalf of MASS . Jackson lawyer Dennis Miller and Patrick Lawler , the Administrator of Youth Village of Memphis, also testified in support of the pilot progam. It was Attorney General Mike Moore however, who stole the show. Mike enthusiastically supported the concept of our proposal and the efforts of the education community in trying to save the children. He pledged his support now, and in the future, to help us with this cause. The Senate bill, which is authored by Senator Grey Ferris of Vicksburg, passed the Senate Education committee on Thursday by a unanimous vote and will be on the agenda Monday for the Juvenile Justice Committee in the Senate. Senator Rob Smith , Chairman of the Juvenile Justice, is also strongly supporting the measure and feels fairly confident it will pass his committee and make its way to the calendar next week.

Cathy Hughes
A Family Legacy Deeply Rooted in the Annals of African American Heritage Most of you may know the rags to riches story of Cathy Hughes, CEO of Radio One, Inc. headquartered out of Baltimore, Maryland and owner of Los Angeles' number urban radio station, 100.3FM The BEAT, largely due to the re-formatting of programming and hiring of talented funny man, Steve Harvey. For those who are just tuning in, Cathy Hughes is a phenomenal woman who rose through the ranks of broadcasting while struggling as a single parent.
Ms. Hughes' early years were plagued with many challenges. She became pregnant at the age of 16, dropped out of college, gained significant weight and suffered from depression. Encouraged by the support of her son, Alfred and the will and determination to succeed, she sacrificed much (sleeping on the radio station floor at nights) and continued to learn every aspect of the radio/communications industry. Today, both Ms. Hughes and her son work together building and maintaining the largest African American owned and operated broadcast-company in the nation.

Aleck "Rice" Miller, a.k.a. "Sonny Boy Williamson" Delta School
According to his gravestone, Rice Miller was born March 11, 1897, in the country between Glendora and Tutwiler, Mississippi. He was raised by his mother Millie Ford and stepfather Jim Miller, and acquired the nickname "Rice" as a young child. Miller, who was interested in music as a toddler, taught himself to play harmonica at the age of five. Interestingly, W.C. Handy heard early blues played on a train platform in Tutwiler about this same time. Miller became quite adept at the harmonica, playing spiritual music at parties for tips as a child. As he grew older, he began playing spirituals at schools and street corners as "Little Boy Blue." During the 1920s he left his parents’ home and began to hobo, playing blues to support himself. Miller hoboed through Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Missouri during the 1920s, playing levee and lumber camps, juke joints, and parties. He claimed to have made unissued test recordings in the late 1920s, but these have never been found. During the 1930s Miller teamed up with guitarists

The American Indian Boarding
School Experience, 1875-1928

A diaphanously and precarious clad America floats westward thru the air with the "star of the empire"
on her forehead. She has left the cities of the East behind, and the wide Mississippi, and still her course
is westward. In her right hand she carries a school booktestimonial of the national enlightenment,
while in her left she trails the slender wires of the telegraph that will bind the nation. Fleeing her
approach are the Indians, buffalo, wild horses, bears and other game, disappearing into the storm and
waves of the Pacific coast. They flee the wondrous vision the star "is too much for them."
