State department of education releases “Progress Report of the Mississippi Education Reform Act of 1982” JACKSON – The Mississippi Department of Education released a report during its board meeting last Thursday outlining progress made by the state since the passage of the Mississippi Education Reform Act of 1982. The Act was designed to achieve educational excellence through the following four means:
  • improved state school governance, leadership and finance, improved professional preparation and growth of school personnel, improved school performance, and higher student achievement.
Overall, significant progress has been made in Mississippi’s public education system during the past 20 years. IMPROVED STATE SCHOOL GOVERNANCE, LEADERSHIP AND FINANCE The Education Reform Act of 1982 strengthened state leadership of Mississippi’s public schools. The state superintendent and members of the Mississippi Board of Education are now appointed positions that provide strong, nonpolitical leadership for public education. The Act also provided the impetus for development of a new performance-based accreditation system to emphasize the outcomes of education, specifically those related to student achievement. In addition, the Commission on School Accreditation and the Mississippi Board of Education developed process standards to ensure school districts provide quality learning environments for students.

A Challenge to Our Communities
Brought to you by the National School Boards Association
A CALL TO ACTION Violence in American society has caused concerns for safety to become a high priority among our citizens. We are concerned about safety in our homes, our communities, and our schools. Schools have been–-and must continue to be-–safe havens for our students. Schools are still the safest place for children to be. But even one incident of violence is too many. More must be done. Violent attacks in Oregon, Pennsylvania, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, and in many urban areas throughout the country during the 1997-98 school year compel us to seek stronger actions in the months ahead. Those who have experienced violence–students and their families, school staffs, boards of education, and communities–have joined together to develop solutions that will prevent such violence from reoccurring. All members of the school community must respond by strengthening their own commitment through aggressive, well designed, and fully funded initiatives so that all children can continue to safely learn and grow. We know that violence is not just a school problem–-it is a community problem and requires a united community response if solutions are to be found. Violence among our youth is a public health crisis and should be treated as such. When threatened by disease our society comes together to find vaccines. Together we must now take preventive measures and find "vaccines" to eradicate violence in American society.

Local Heroes: The People Who Run for School Board
Judy Saks
Published in partnership with the National School Boards Foundation Who is behind the major policy decisions in your child's school system? Who decides what classes should be offered and which textbooks should be used? Who determines what is "safe" for students and "ethical" on the part of administrators? Who defines bus routes in districts where there is racial desegregation? If you guessed the school board, you're right. But how much do you really know about your school board and its agenda? Just who are those mysterious school board members? The demographic profile of the typical school board member is a white, middle-aged, married male with an advanced degree who is employed in a professional position and earns more than $50,000 a year. School board members are familiar faces in most districts. They often are parents who want to provide better opportunities for their children; retired teachers and administrators who maintain a strong interest in education; professionals who believe in community service; and members of the business community who understand the value of a good education in preparing students for satisfying careers.
