Great Sites for Teaching About... The Mississippi and Other Great Rivers
Education World's Great Sites for Teaching About... page highlights Web sites to help educators work timely themes into their lessons. Internet educator Walter McKenzie selected the ten sites listed here, which are among the best on the Web for teaching about the Mississippi and other great rivers.
  • The Mississippi: River of Song
    http://www.pbs.org/riverofsong/

On this PBS site, sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution, visitors click along a map of the Mississippi River to learn about the rich musical heritage that evolved there. Students can immerse themselves in the tradition of legends such as Levon Helm and the contemporary music of Soul Asylum. The site includes biographies, discographies, and audio and video clips to bring the culture alive for students. Although the teacher's guide was developed primarily to accompany the TV series, the extension activities remain viable lessons teachers can adapt for use in the classroom.

This Issue Brief examines eight programs that encourage healthy behaviors and improve student learning.... Coordinated School Health Overview Coordinated school health is a set of eight related components to improve the health of and reduce risky behaviors by school-aged youth. It includes:
    • Health Education   Physical Education  Health Services   Nutritional Services   Healthy School Environment    Health Promotion for Staff
Education reforms have not succeeded in improving the performance of all students, particularly those who do not arrive at school ready to learn. If efforts to raise student achievement and "leave no child behind" are to succeed, schools must pay more attention to behaviors and lifestyles that act as roadblocks to learning. Coordinated school health encourages healthy lifestyles, provides needed supports to at-risk students, and helps to reduce the prevalence of health problems that impair academic success.

Web posted at: 11:33 p.m. EDT (0333 GMT) HATTIESBURG, Mississippi (CNN) Rejecting an insanity defense, a Mississippi jury found 17-year-old Luke Woodham guilty Friday night of two counts of murder and seven counts of aggravated assault for a shooting spree last October at Pearl High School. Woodham was accused of killing two classmates ex-girlfriend Christina Menefee, 16, and her friend Lydia Dew, 17 and wounding seven others during the attack, the first of a series of deadly mass shootings at U.S. schools. Jurors deliberated about five hours before returning their verdict. Judge Samac Richardson immediately sentenced Woodham to two consecutive life sentences for the murder convictions and seven 20-year sentences for the aggravated assault convictions.
