The centers have reference books, fiction and non-fiction books, newspapers, magazines, films, and educational software. Each center is equipped with computers, printers, and scanners which allow students to access on-line searches to MAGNOLIA and other educational sites. Both KES and MCHS Library Media Centers have the computerized Accelerated Reader Program. The students are given a reading placement test to establish their reading levels. Then, the students select an AR book, read it, and take a computerized quiz. Teachers and students immediately get individualized feedback. Information Literacy: A Tool To Spread The Word
Information Literacy:A Tool to Spread the Word
-By Becky Mather,Information Literacy Task Force Co-Chair A recent article in Principal Leadership ,("Eliminating a 'Yes, But ' Curriculum," Oct.2001 ) discussed the importance of helping students become "confident, competent, and joyous readers. The author, Janet Allen, spoke of the need to teach students to love reading. Amen to that! And who better to help nurture a love of reading than the school media specialist? Unfortunately, media specialists and media centers are not mentioned in this article. As Matt Kollasch, moderator of the SLIK-12 listserv wrote on Oct.16:
" Read it and weep folks. Not ONE mention of a school library media specialist or the physical entity called the "library" in this article on the importance of reading among students. And this is going to be read by school leaders who will,in many cases, (yet again) ignore the importance of a school library media program. Someone in the field should react to what is missing in this story! AASL should react to this article! How is it that the editors at PRINCI-
PALS didn 't catch is that Janet Allen ignored "us." We aren 't telling our story very that it? I have been out of the front ranks of school librarianship for about a decade now,so please help me understand why PRINCIPALS and Ms.Allen still don 't get it, as it were?"
